Been looking for awile for just the right tractor..that was easy on the wallet....needed some work. ..easy to work on.. and had good parts support. All that turned into this 1955 Allis Chalmers WD-45. Runs amd functions great. Needs some things to be more reliable. Already tackling the fuel bowl. Needs a carb rebuild eventually and some electronic help. Just put on a new battery box..and 6 volt battery. Eventually a 3 point hitch for it. It's a great tractor..with snappy power on demand ! Think I'm gonna leave it in work clothes too. So much character.
First tractor I drove was a WD45. Had to drive it 15 miles on the highway when dad purchased it. Not a warm day either. Your's looks good.
Good looking tractor! Looks like everything is there and in good shape. A little work and it will be good to go!
So I have a question about these old tractors... Why is the seat positioned so far back on many of them? Was adjusting implements on the fly a necessity or something? It's like they picked the most dangerous spot for an operator to sit? Hey, lets put the seat directly above the PTO shaft and make sure if the driver falls he gets eaten by his implement! Always been a curiosity of mine. I went to a farmer convention thing some years ago and there was a display of about 20 different AC tractors there. Pretty neat seeing that many old orange tractors together. All were fully restored. Have pics....somewhere.
I remember farmers going out to spread manure and the spreader would have long levers that the operator could reach from the tractor seat. The levers controlled the operation of the spreader. The beaters and the apron chain were driven by the wheels of the spreader and not the pto.
My post was not meant to make you nervous. I know it was a different age but dang...the guys who were able to build those tractors must have known that placement was not ideal.
Oh no..your ok ! I thought abt it when I looked at it originally. You can tell comfort and safety were not a huge concern with any of the tractors built in this Era. But oddly enough..the seat suspension is quite nice ! But what a pleasure to get on my Kubota ..in every way lol !
Getting some easy job duties at the moment. Which is good..cuz the more I run it..the more I see what it needs !
Have several photos of me riding on those fenders as a child with my father. Good memories. Thanx4 sharing
I just want one to put around on lol. Probably an Oliver 66 if wheeled but I'd prefer an Oliver HG / OC3 crawler. If it happened to have a blade that would be ok too. Lol
