I split up all the large rounds from this silver maple yesterday, some of the ugliest splits I ever saw! But the recipient doesn't mind as long as they're light to carry. Not a lot of pictures, forgot all about it. But today I went out to split the smaller rounds with the channel lock maul, which went really well! A few misses and chunks but I had some rounds that I thought would give me alot of trouble, pop perfectly and aim was spot on. All that's left (and useful) is this huge crotch peice, not sure if I want to mess with it or not. What a monster. Might just noodle it in half. some brush piles I need to haul to the back and burn. Gonna be a nice fire!
I have trashed a bunch of this before , save them for last and then too tired to even mess with. Maple maybe not so bad but some of the oak pecan and elm uglies don’t make it to firewood status.
I usually don't have much problem with crotches. I will split them in the middle and then take each round and split normally. There are some funny looking pieces but it all burns.
Good job. Yeah, that is a big piece, but if I have one, I try to split each side down to where the crotch part will fit in the stove. My theory is, if it fits in the stove and is dry enough, it will burn. Great for overnighters!
Nice work sir! I enjoy a little hand splitting now and then. Yeah that crotch piece would get noodled here. I hate ugly splits!
