Stuff looks pretty dry already. Never burned any walnut, I hear it has some oil in it & burns hot . Let us know what yo think of it ? ?
Never have. I will let you guys know. Was hoping someone here would let us know more about burning it.
It smells heavenly. I'll be burning several cord of it this winter from a huge one we cut down and milled a couple years ago.... I've burned it before, it's up around ash and soft maple or a little better in terms of BTU'S if I'm not mistaken. I like it. A little more ash when done burning, but still a great wood.
@Scotty Overkill...My neighbor just had a walnut tree come down and I have been helping him cut it up in my spare time, is the wood any good for grilling?
I hear mixed opinions on this. I personally have never tried it, but I've read where others on the Internet have used it. Read up on it some before trying it. I've always had lots of applewood, maple, hickory, mulberry, cherry and oak around and I love those flavors so I guess I've never been inclined to try it myself.

Thanks...this tree was snapped off about 8' off the ground by the 70' oak that came down in a storm. I have a feeling there will be a bunch of odd pcs and right away thought about using them in the old Weber. I have plenty of oak, and usually some hickory around, but what I miss from out West is the Mequite we used to scrounge in the desert! I have also used pecan and man that was gooder!
From what I read in that link and others was that walnut is good for red meat, it has a sharper, more bitter taste......probably a lot like mesquite or something smoked heavy in hickory. May be worth a go!
I've always heard that Walnut is not great in the BTU department, but holds a fire for a long time. I'm planning on mixing mine with a higher BTU wood to stretch out a hot fire. We'll see how it goes.
To the wood bin with a elm that was dying. The wind finally blew it down! The trees are so thick that sometimes they get jammed on another tree on way down! Have fun, be safe...
I like that Ranger. I burnt a lot of walnut my first year burning. Like Scotty says, seemed like a lot of ash.
