I know most of you already have pick ups. I will be looking for a truck after the new year. I'm going to use it as a everyday car for work and of course firewood I'm looking at the dodge ram1500 diesel or the new ford f150 which is 700 lbs lighter. I put about 80 miles a day. Any suggestions

Oh boy, this oughtta be gooder.

No experience with the newer trucks, but I've had several Ford trucks, and they were reliable.

You're comparing a diesel and an aluminum body V6 to a V8;) They have active cylinder management which will go into V4 mode when under minimal load.

Are you sold on a full size pickup? The baby duramax should debut next year in the Colorado/Canyon - they should have better MPG than those trucks

The reality with new trucks(1/2tons) is the pickup bed payloads aren't all that great. I'm assuming a quad cab is what you are after with the kids?
A trailer is probably the best option for bigger hauls, but the bed is there for the smaller ones. Get the trailer package

Are you planning on 4wd? - probably a good idea in NY, so go recheck those estimated MPG numbers - they are all rated for 2wd drive models

I will start doing my homework on all of them. A quad cab is what I'm looking for especially with my kids. My buddy has a nice trailer I could use for big hauls and I will definitely get the trailer package because I will need one for my splitter as well. I will also need the 4wd for the snow storms..

Once anyone uses a pickup... they always wonder how they lived without one. Our Silverado rides as smooth as any car I've been in... good luck with your search.

For driving 80 miles a day I'd look at a car and get an older 3/4 or 1 ton pickup for trash duty/wood hauling/hunting/hauling lumber, etc.

I used to drive about 100 miles a day using a 2005 TDI Jetta. I did that drive for a year or two in a couple trucks. The Jetta gets over 2x the mileage (average about 43-44mpg) and it handles better on snow and ice. Only times it had issues is in deep snow where it would pack into the grill and roll over the hood. A truck would have had the clearance.

Not sure you can get a diesel in a 1500, I think you need at least 3/4 ton for that.
I'm a diesel guy for sure, many many miles can be driven on them with great results
and decent mileage for a truck. Upfront cost will be a big factor, they are expensive.
You may want to consider gas for a first truck.

Been a while since diesel was less than 87 low lead gas too. That part would drive me nuts.

Dodge has a diesel option for the 1/2 ton. It puts the truck in the $40,000 area (which is INSANE for a 1/2 ton truck!) The gas motor is about $4000 less (still INSANE!)

To compare I paid around $14k for my 2500 diesel when it was about 6 years old in 2005.

It's supposed to get 25mpg, vs about 18-20 for a gas motor. 7mpg difference. With road diesel being more than gas, it's about a wash as far as any fuel savings.

I'm sure the diesel tows better and doesn't drop in economy as much when doing so. And there is the fact that the motor should last longer. Being in New York though I bet the truck would rust apart before more gas engines are worn out, let alone a diesel.

I believe it's built by VM Motori, same folks that built the diesel for the Liberty and Grand Cherokee.
VM Motori is an Italian company owned by Fiat so whole knows how parts availability would be. I doubt they will be building millions of these engines like the Cummins 6BT found in the bigger Dodges.
