Yup you are correct! Spent Saturday/Sunday on board with my sons scout troop. We explored Pretty much everywhere they allow you to go. It gave great perspective to the story’s my grandfather told about being in the pacific in WW2. He said when he boarded the train in Boston headed for cali. He never thought he would see home again. The passage from California to the Aleutian Islands was so rough that they wouldn’t let the new enlisted men out of the racks out of fear of them jumping overboard. He said the odors and noises on the ship we something he would never forget. After being on the ship for not more than 24 hours tied to the dock I can’t imagine what it must have been like during battle.
I remember my Dad talking about being crammed on a troop ship(WW2) and sailing for days to get to Iran. They were forced to eat nothing but canned pineapple for 3 meals a day. Once they got there (he was a combat engineer), their mission was to keep the airfields in shape while the germans would do daily bombing runs to take them out. The whole time I was growing up I remember him not being able to stomach ANYTHING that contained pineapple right up to the day he died. Many never made it back from there although he was one of the lucky ones who did.
I spent a fair about of time with gramps after he retired and before he passed. Never once saw him eat a single grain of rice.
What part of the state are you in gaberelli? We sure enjoyed our trips to the Northwoods each fall for 20 years with our GSP to chase Grouse and Woodcock! Knew about every place up there and who had taco Tuesday and Prime rib Saturday and of course Friday fish fry. Met some very nice folks and still stay in touch with them. Making me hungry Oh, and the diners that served homemade pies If it weren’t for the boot leather we were using up we would have come home 10 pounds heavier!
N NW. Grew up hunting grouse and now get my kids out. Definitely some good food up here if you know where to go. Can’t beat the people though.
This is from 8/17/2017, it looks like we had a dry summer that year. The water can be up to or past the rock on the beach on the right of the picture, usually the water is at that height in the spring and at times in the summer.
