I finished the leftover red oak logs from last fall over the last 4 days. About 2 cord. Then, after hauling one load of sawdust away, I began the splitting. I am too sore to take pics.
Good man, did you have a nice meal after? The work and staying away from bread or snacking at night is working, on 4/15 I weighed 227.2, this morning I was 212.4.
I split more of the pine I bucked up, I put 2 face cord up last fall and 10 this spring for a total of 12. I have a few pictures in there that I took the weed eater to, my plan is getting some of the pine c/s so next spring it won't be all softwood. Picture 3740 is the first load, 3741 is the stack finished after three loads, 3743 & 44 is the first area I'll clean up, 3745 is the second area I plan on c/s some if not all and the last two are the area I've been c/s from with some rounds still left.
No firewood work for me today; I have dog watching duties. That lab will scoot over a few doors if given the chance. Back to the salt mine tomorrow weather permitting.
I did some bucking up of one maple and split all the rounds from the two maples that came down over the winter, most of what I split 3761 is still standing.
Yes, it was perfect temps for working, it was nice to c/s some hardwood after all the pine I've done this spring. That first area I was working will soon be filled with ferns and bugs, the wood will be out of that area tomorrow. After I get the wood out, the trunk of this beech will be next.
That beech reminds me of the ones here in my woods. Partly dead and punky and some have broken off like that. I noticed many of the living ones with minimal leafing and the ones they do have are wilting. Most are on the small to medium size.
I'm thinking about felling more beech, they usually start hollowing out the bigger they get. It will depend how many beech are in the area, the deer love the beech nuts.
I hauled all the wood I split yesterday up the hill and out, I did get one load stacked, I'll finish the face cord stack out with some soft maple rounds or ironwood rounds we have. Picture 3762 is the last load from the first area I split yesterday, 3764 is the maple from the last area I split more maple yesterday, 3763 & 65 are pictures of certain areas on our lot and 3766 is the face cord almost finished. In behind the face cord stack are almost four face cord that is four or five years seasoned, both will get moved so that whole area will be filled this year so all twelve face cord in that area will be seasoned together.
We are finally beginning to see some leaves pop out on trees! Today was wet, cold and windy. those trees will get a good drink out of this weather. The next 4 days will be warm and sun filled; they're really going to grow after that!
Today I moved and stacked what was a full two face cord of ash (until mother nature brought back the cold weather) to the area we'll be burning from this coming heating season. Two years back I saved out five face cord for a neighbor who got stiffed by their firewood delivery guy but they made it through the winter with what they had. I saved that five face cord out for the same neighbor for this coming year but they finally received their firewood delivery from a new business before last winter hit so they won't need it. I've moved what was a full three face cord with two more left and then we'll have room for more firewood in that area. I should start moving the last two face cord tomorrow or Tuesday. We use to burn ten or twelve face cord a year out of an area so come spring time that area would get filled so it seasoned together, we're back to doing that.
The only work I did today was take the weed eater to the area between the trees we planted and then watered them. I watered the flowers around the house and then went down towards the area we call the sandpit to weed eat an area I missed. We're at 82 degrees so far.
I should be back at this pile of rounds, there should be enough left that I can finish off the stack I started, once that is finished I'll get more rounds c/s so I can get another face cord up for a total of 14 face of pine.
I finished the face cord of pine I had started (unlucky 13) and started on our 14th face cord. I did move over to a different pile of logs and c/s/s most of the bigger pine on the bottom. Picture 3779 are the rounds from the first pile I started on, 3781 is the last load of pine splits from that pile, 3783 is the unlucky 13th face cord finished, 3784 is the new pile of logs I started bucking up today (these are pine logs from 2018 clearing for the garage I did, 3786 is a round, still pretty good, 3788 is the start of the 14th face cord of pine and 3789 is what's left of the pile.
Once I'm done with the softwood, hopefully before the end of this week, I'll start on the hardwood that's down. We have that nice size maple branch that's down up top that I want c/s/s before fall. I'm sure we'll get some storms with high winds so that can create more work than I want. Our bigger lot has a bunch of softwood down that I haven't touched yet. Depending on the temps and the old frame, it looks like a working summer for me. The wife never wanted to burn pine but she likes it except in the colder months, I never thought we would burn 12 face cord in a year, that was two years worth of wood for the shoulder season until this past heating season.
