Yes, most of the brush had already been mulched, pushed the remaining limbs in the woods, root ball fell back in the hole.
Stacking has commenced. The mixed pile of white and chestnut oak is finished. This pile includes the chestnut oak from November, at the beginning of this thread. Now on to the red and black oak. We’ll see how much space is left over after I stack what I have. My dead oak mania may have to wrap up until next year. What’s left to stack (the temporary pile in the front will also get thrown into the mix)
Believe me I’d love to keep hitting it hard, but I’ve seriously got to finish the wood shed I started last year I hate having a pergola over my piles rather than a roof
Yessir I think for the first time ever, my oak inventory level has surpassed the 50% threshold. It’ll never be 100% oak, but even if it was I wouldn’t complain
I managed to knock out another stack this afternoon. This is mostly red and black oak, with a few white and chestnut oak splits mixed in. There’s still a small pile of red oak and the white/chestnut chunk pile to process. Also not pictured are a few shorter red oak logs that’ll need to be turned into splits. I have enough room to the right of the stack I just made to squeak in a single row stack with what’s left.
I’m with you 100% there. Most of my fires are mixed loads. I’ll burn oak exclusively from time to time, but I have enough of a variety on hand to where it just makes sense to mix it up.
If it weren't for a nice size BL and a monster HL, I'd be all red and chestnut oak right now. I'll eventually mix those locusts in but it won't be for a few years. Right now I have all red oak chunks in the firebox just pouring out the BTU's. Complaining about that would make me think you . Stacks just keep getting better and bigger Eric. The amount of pride looking at those follows that trend too.
This white oak log about 20’ into the woods has been on my radar. As part of a deal I made with a coworker where he gave me his old Cub Cadet tractor in exchange for an undetermined amount of sawmill logs, I decided to retrieve a section today. HEAVY Got it loaded up regardless, then proceeded to trim it (very roughly) square with the chainsaw. So far I’ve given him a couple loads of black locust logs with one black birch thrown in. If I can get him a couple more lengths of white oak and whatever else pops up this year, I think we’ll be in good shape.
