Yup, red oak firewood logs..... making some pretty low grade lumber, but it's what the customer wants.
It's frustrating to saw low grade crooked logs when I've got mountains of straight stuff waiting to be milled, but it is what it is, and this job was next on my "schedule".

I eat it.....wife puts it in my breakfast muffins....lotsa good fiber there.....

Actually, we burn most of it because it's a fire hazard, and the compost pile can only handle so much carbon.
Sawdust (even pine) can last for many years in a pile because it's got almost no nitrogen to get the decomposition process going.
It does make a decent mulch for keeping vegetation from growing where you don't want it.
All the cedar sawdust gets burned because it's definitely not good for the garden.

Morning all. Day has dawned clear and sunny with temps just above freezing. Whenever we get a sunny start to the morning, I think of the song "I can see clearly now" by Johnny Nash.

campinspecter is headed out for another load of firewood. Today and tomorrow are going to be nice out. Me, I am off to work. Yesterday afternoon was frustrating as we didn't have an internet. Of course everything I wanted to work on needed the internet. It is scary how dependent we are on it.

Biddleman I hope the surgery goes well for your son.
T.Jeff Veal Enjoy your few days off and Don't think of the woodyard - right?
Sawdust Man years ago on the coast here, there would be what we called beehive burners next to every sawmill for burning the sawdust. campinspecter grew up in a home that had a sawdust burning woodstove for cooking and heating the house. When I met him, his brother lived in the same community and they had a sawdust burning stove. It was the first I had ever seen. Instead of a woodshed, they had a big bin for sawdust connected to the house.

    Everyone have a great day.

Yes, there was one of those beehives in the town where I grew up.
I used to burn planer shavings in a top load wood stove in my shop...it worked pretty well, and got rid of lots waste.
Never have tried sawdust, but I'd like to build a wood fired water heater... maybe I could burn at least some of the sawdust that way.

There was a big hopper on the side of the stove that fed the sawdust into the stove. The trick was having the sawdust dry so it didn't hang up in the hopper. I wonder if the auger that pellet stoves use would work for sawdust.

Thank you everyone for the prayers and well wishes for my son. The surgery on his thumb went very well.
Though he was high as a kite in recovery, saying funny stuff.  at one point he was trying to get me to thumb wrestle him. Said he was world champ.

I don't know but if the sawdust was very dry it might. The trick would be how to get it dry enough to move with an auger without sticking and not falling into said auger.
