A newbie and amateur here. Scored my first big scrounge from a family member this week. Thoroughly enjoyed bucking all this with a family member last night. Two tanks on my MS 251, plus an MS 271 and EGO electric. There's a mix of oak, cherry and ?. The mystery tree was identified as elm by the tree crew but it split easily so based on what I've learned here I'm assuming it's not elm and have committed to taking it. Was wondering if anyone can help ID this one? The rounds circled in red and the split round are from the tree in question.
Don't take this as Gospel, but it resembles some hackberry I've had. We have the smooth bark kind and it looks very similar.
The bark on the rounds circled looks like quaking aspen to me. Out your way they call it popple. The darker heartwood starting to get soft is also indicative of aspen. BUT... the ambrosia staining on the end grain on the rounds on the right looks like red maple. The thickness of the bark looks correct. I think you have both species in that pile, along with some white oak and black cherry.

Welcome to the FHC Bernie Great to have you! My first thought was aspen as Eric said. Fast drying low btu wood. Good for shoulder season. Split it now and probably ready for the Fall. Some nice firewood you have there.
Hey Bernie Nice to meet you. BTU content is not the only measure of the quality of firewood. The beauty of your surroundings and cutting with friends and family means a lot also. Likewise, Oak is good to keep the winter cold out the house but a fire of Aspen in the fire ring with friends and a bunch of kids roasting hotdogs and smores is great firewood also. Welcome aboard!
