Currently sitting at 58f @ 9:30. Not saying this season is over, but looking like we are close. No fires in the foreseeable future.
39/72 We're burning Ash put up in December. I'll probably have a fire every night this week, frost warning for Thursday.
Last Thursday I declared the season was done. Well I fibbed to you all. After a cool and cloudy day, we had a fire last night of cherry, poplar, and a split of oak. May have the same tonight.
We downsized a couple of years ago. A key criteria was a house with a woodstove or an easy way to install one. This house came with a Napoleon 1400 and 5-6 cords of wood. It's a long story but due to chimney problems , we couldn't use the stove last winter. So no wood was put up last summer. This turns out to be a good thing, despite running out of seasoned wood. The roomie now sees the value (she never had a woodstove before) in having an ongoing supply! That said, she is wondering when I can stop putting up wood. So far we've got 2 cords of Ash split & stacked plus a lot in the driveway that needs to be stacked, six trees worth of logs that were just taken down and the neighbor is giving us another two trees of Ash. Meanwhile, I've got a lot of mixed hardwood happily drying and a good source of more for free. So, I am quietly sneaking up on a 3+ year hoard, not to mention close to a face cord of "G.N.O.M.E.S!"
32/70 The sun is gaining power and hanging around longer each day. Unfortunately the cold rules the night yet. No fear as we will be complaining of heat, humidity and bugs soon.
So, I guess we should've known better! We put all of our stove stuff away last week when temps were in the 70s and 80s. Yep, we were done for the season. Last night, it all came back out! Overnight temps around freezing would've resulted in the house temp at around 60F in the morning. We instead put in a mix of ash and chunkies for a nice warm fire. House was at 70F this morning. Might need another one tonight, as we're looking at around 40F tonight. Just when you thought it was safe... of course, this happens to us every year! Next year, no putting way the stove stuff until May!
I just checked and last year it was May 9th when I had my last fire. IIRC up to that point we were still getting nights in the low 40s. Then the following weekend I put up my pool for the season.
