It could be a colorful night sky for more than half of millions of people in the northern U.S. as the aurora borealis, or northern lights, could make an appearance in more than half of the country. The possibility of seeing the dazzling display comes after the sun had a solar flare erupt on Friday that was directed toward Earth, according to the NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center. As a result, 30 states will have the chance to see the the aurora borealis, stretching from Washington to Maine, and as far south as Kansas, the Space Weather Prediction Center says, as long as weather conditions permit.

Northern lights could be seen in 30 US states Sunday. Here's where. (usatoday.com)

    Go figure.

Seems to happen during meteor showers as well.

It’s partially cloudy here but it’s supposed to clear off later. From my viewing point the closest artificial light ( yard light ) is about 1 mile in any direction & the closest town (population 1200 ) is about 5 miles as the crow flies.

Hopefully the show hasn’t already passed by Spaceweather said it hit earlier than expected but may fire back up as we pass thru the remnants.

My viewing point will be up on the hill on this side of the Cottonwoods in the middle of the pic.

Looks like it'll be between 10 and 2 from here. 5% chance of precipitation...means almost no cloud cover (I hope).......just may work out!

    Thanks! :handshake:

I saw them tonight, just a few photos that we got with my wife’s phone. I tried a panoramic, video & slo-no but they didn’t come out well.

Her camera really enhanced the colors.

Except for my house. Every single time there is something interesting to see in the sky, my place is heavily overcast.

    Beautiful!

I could see light on the horizon above the sand bluffs earlier, but now it's east of us without the beautiful show. Tried to take a pic of light and all the stars above but it's just black. Thank you for sharing, feel like I can see them too.

Boo, an hour glass of sand that was between the window and screen fell into the window tracks when I opened it. Got it shut but not locked, will vacuum tomorrow when everyone isn't sleeping.

Clouds here too. I'll probably be seeing lots of pictures though.

I went out to look about 11:15 but it was cloudy/overcast and the lights from surrounding cities were reflecting off the clouds, almost made it seem like twilight.

I went out north of town about three miles and found a pretty good spot. Show started at right at 11:00, and the good stuff lasted nearly 30 minutes.
You often hear the phrase “pictures don’t do it justice” …. Well in this case it was quite the opposite!!! What I witnessed was quite gorgeous but it didn’t have near the color that showed up in the pictures.
Always been fascinated with the auroras and make it a point to look when they are forecasted. Same here, a good camera does wonders at pulling out the colors the naked eye just can’t quite enhance.

I saw the vidid purple & green in North Dakota once, it was a jaw dropper & utterly surreal.

Last nights show was pretty fantastic though, I was giving thanks for the show & opportunity to witness it. I may have giggled a bit as well. Things like the Northern Lights really help keep things in perspective, at least for me anyway.

NOT my picture. This was taken by Anthony Bucci after midnight here. The town in the picture is where Mom lives.

I did not take this photo, but I wish I could have been there!

I never thought the Northern Lights would ever make it down south to the Texas Panhandle area but they did. This photo was taken on the outskirts of Stinnett, Texas on Sunday night.
