Cut a few last week Tim. Cut yesterday and this morning and got 10lbs.

 

Nice looking Asparagus!

 

Wow that looks great. Sure sign of spring right there.

 

Planted tommy toes next to the perimeter so we could harvest from outside.


Watermelon seeds have popped up so they will get in there soon. Guess my pepper seeds are junk. I’ll have to get some more plants. I put about 30 in a wet paper towel, in a ziploc but none are germinating.

 

Are yoy covering your tomatos at night?
I really want to get my started plants in the raised beds

 

I haven't but will tonight and when the temp is supposed to dip low. End of this week is supposed to be near 90. Can't wait for that first fresh tomato sammy.

 

Finally got the fence up. Tried to use what I had around. Won't win fence of the year, but it should get the job done. BL gold as the posts.


Some green coming up. I tried the method of planting potatoes in straw, so far nothing seems to be going on with those.

Looks good and will do the job. More info on your rain barrel/irrigation system? I'm hoping to build something over the next year or so, so am looking at different setups.

 

That barrel represents stages of my life.
I had it since I was a kid. Friends and I would get in it and roll down a long hill, got older and I would fill it with ice, toss a keg in it for parties. Now its my rain barrel.

I got a bulkhead valve for the bottom of the barrel and the multi spigot from home depot. All the tubing I got online from dripdepot.com
Dripdepot has systems already put together but you can build your own too. Easy to change and modify. Im still experimenting in layout.

I got the drip system because they recommend it for gravity fed systems. Not enough pressure for soaker hoses.
The amount of pressure I get is surprising. I think I could get away with a soaker. Might get one and try it out

I pump water up from the creek to fill the barrel.
Its working out so far.

 

There is hope after 2.5 inches of rain and very high winds a few days ago. All the small vegetable sets appear to be okay, we'll see.

 

Temps been dipping low overnight. Had a few frosts, lost two pepper plants. My fault. Been covering in the evening. Last night it got to 30.

 

Mother Nature can definitely provide challenges (different issues depending on where you live). I'm finally down to about 3-weeks away before I can plant (average growing season is about 140 days with a last frost/first frost average of May 13 to Oct 1 according to the Farmer's Almanac). I've been doing other 'gardening' things while waiting to plant veggies (transplanting some spruce trees, planting more fruit trees, getting some new juniper shrubs in, etc.).

12 pepper plants. 4 yellow, 4 orange and 4 labeled lunch box mix.

Monster Asparagus!!

 

Got a bit impatient and transplanted 23 leaf lettuce and 12 radish plants into one of the raised beds over the last couple days. Wouldn't you know it, we had frost early this morning. I had covered all but two of the larger lettuce plants with upside down plastic cups (mini greenhouse effect) so hopefully everything will be ok. Should have known better and just stuck to the rule of thumb up here in that you don't plant until at least Mother's Day. C'est la vie.

 

Those leafy greens are pretty hardy; they should be fine. I've seen cabbage, cilantro and spinach live through multiple overnight low temperatures in the mid 20s and bounce back.

 

I'm with you though. Just can't wait for that first fresh cut salad and tomato!

 

Yep. I'm running a little behind, but my tomato seeds came last week, so we will plant them this weekend.
Got 11 different kinds of seeds.(3 are cherry type).
Plus we'll get romas and maybe amish paste.
