I have used the Lyman brass cleaner for years and seem it is about time to change it as it now seems to leave a layer of slime on my chains. What have ya'll found to be the best OTC or homemade solution for your tanks?

I’ve never done chains. Experimented with rifle brass for awhile. Think I used white vinegar and water 50/50. For chains some blue dawn dish detergent would help break down the oil too.

For chainsaw chain I've used water with Dawn soap and generic parts cleaner degreaser that doesn't fume/off gas.

Lemishine is popular for cleaning firearms stuff. I've used it before with stainless media in a tumbler. You'll try anything to get the crud out of a .22lr suppressor. Learned to dip them in synthetic brake fluid after cleaning to keep it from sticking so badly.

Looks like the Stihl arborist top handle saw I ran over with my tractor a few months back. it went to the landfill. 700 clams down the tirlet real quick.

Prior to grinding. The gunk on a loop will foul the grinding stone.

I soak my milling chains in either Purple Power or Simple Green. Both work great but I've never used an ultrasonic. Quick swipe with a brush in the sink and a rinse w/ hot water and they come clean very easily.

    I use Simple Green myself.

If I'm really in a hurry, I'll use aerosol brake cleaner on a loop. I do prefer a soak in the ultrasonic cleaner however but that takes time.

I don't usually clean my chains. I got 2 gallons of once used chains onetime and I needed to clean them up as I sorted them out and some of those chains clearly ran on used oil or vegetable oils, not bar oil.

It was a lot of work but for $25 I got chain for years. Soaking in a bucket with simple green for a few days doesn't take much time.

After the chains are all clean and sharpened I soak them or ultrasonic them in bar oil then let them drip dry back into the soak. I want to get new oil back into the chain internals before flash rust takes over.

I’ve never done chains but Simple Green and water work well for cleaning the small engine carbs.
