Maybe they're on a freq that radios like that can't receive?

Picked up my tech and general last year (and GMRS). Critical component was joining an active club with some top notch and very patient Elmers.

Learned a lot. Mostly focus on digi modes for regional comms (beyond LOS but more NVIS and less dx) and SOTA activations on UHF/VHF.

How do batteries charge? I have extra batteries, bought connectors to charge the baofangs.
    CyberPower CP1500AVRLCD (Replacement) Battery Set

And also the similar in reverse with 12v car socket thing to plug into the generator to charge. How does the battery know to take or give power? Do I need to switch the poles, Or?

    Kinda confused on the intent.

Are you wanting to charge the baofeng batteries from those you pictured?

I would not advise directly connecting the batteries.. a charge controller would be best suited to your needs.

How would you recharge these batteries I linked?

Yes the intent is to charge the baofeng from those pictured, what I don't know is how to recharge the batteries I pictured. I have connections for those batteries female/male cigarette liters like in cars, and our generator has a cigarette socket. But how does the battery know to discharge or recharge? Or how would you recharge these batteries I linked?

Chaz, I talked about distance challenges :wacky:regarding husband using yards/football fields for 30 years and me not understanding and you said you know that from though now it's been like 35 years since the one high school football game I got that day off work for.... You mentioned you know other distance challenged women...this is the same situation except with those batteries pictured.

I use these types of batteries for my game cameras. I connect the alligator clips from a battery charger right to the small terminals like I would a car battery. This past hunting season was the first time using these small 12v batteries for the cameras and I did not have to charge or change a battery at all. They lasted from early Sept through late Jan when I pulled them and my battery voltage was reading in the mid 11 volts.

Depending on your radio charger base could you use one of these to charge the radio off the battery?

I'm kind of confused as well but to charge those batteries a small battery tender would work or any 12 v charger really the dumber ones you will have to watch the voltage
    as they charge.
The smarter ones will sense the voltage and stop charging. I like the victron chargers but $$ I have one for my lifepo4- but it works great on lead acid as well.
I was able to get a sla back from the dead with the victron.

How to charge the baofeng from that sla, I'd have to see pictures of what you are trying to use.

wildwest I have similar to this for charging in the vehicle.

    BaoFeng 2 Pack UV-5R BF-F8HP Extended Battery BL-5L 3800 mAh with USB Charging Cable for UV-5R, BF-F8HP, UV-5X3 Radios https://a.co/d/45COz3w

But you'll definitely need some sort of charge controller between the batteries.

Those 12v batteries should not be connected directly to the radio batteries.. they may explode.

Ah, I see, thanks! I have a Schumacher on my truck not sure if it's smart of dumb though, we leave it hooked up and plugged in most the time, so it might be a smart one.
I bought this and Anderson Pole adapters to put the eye rings, to plug the baofeng or cell phone car chargers into. www.amazon.com/SPARKING-Cigarette-Lighter-Terminals-Extension/dp/B07448P2GH/?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_w=0h624&content-id=amzn1.sym.08900ed4-dd64-49b1-bce7-2e717defb1aa&pf_rd_p=08900ed4-dd64-49b1-bce7-2e717defb1aa&pf_rd_r=MJHXESA2RR4K6C0S16R4&pd_rd_wg=nm3JB&pd_rd_r=5f82c6ba-495c-4500-9ccb-4fb9fdda571b&ref_=pd_gw_ci_mcx_mi&th=1

Thank you, by the way, I switched browsers and now I have to take the HTTP// to post links.

I meant to reply earlier, feeling under the weather, sorry. Hopefully this is more cohenent that my post last night. This is for prepping in the event electricity is out for a long time. My intention is to charge baofeng and cell phone from the batteries via car cigarette chargers if needed. I can recharge the batteries using the Schumacher plugged into the generator. Is this plan doable?

    Should be workable.

I have a lighter style USB charging port for both vehicles, and the system I linked charges the batteries fine.

You'd have to use a different system for the standard baofeng batteries though.

I have several of these on my bus. They're awesome. A few weeks ago I put another one on the outside of the bus so I can charge my phone, plug in awning lights or power my tailgater smoker.

How do you plan on interfacing the ring terminals to the bars on the baofeng ?
Agree you can't charge the li-on battery directly from the SLA's without some form of charge controller or you will overcharge the li-on.
This would work for you with that cig socket you have
I'd dump the ring terminals and go with a spade connector, see what the terminal is on those batteries either f1 or f2 and get those to connect to your socket instead of the rings.
With the charge base, it has the micro controller in it to prevent overcharging of the baofeng battery.
They also make "piggyback" terminals so you could connect something else to the battery as well, maybe another radio to charge at the same time?

You guys are just the COOLEST!!!

:bug: YES! Except I didn't think about packaging it.... and can invision the loose batteries and connectors in a box getting dusty. This is SO cool!

Buying replacement USP batteries is what started this. I ordered them, they did not show up. After several phone calls over 5 weeks instead of filing a lost report the Gal had fit, and sent 3 pairs of batteries instead of the replacing the orig pair I ordered. So, I have 4 extra batteries.

    upload_2023-4-11_13-54-56.png

Regarding the USB ports, my husbands car phone charger has a USB that one can plug other phone cords into, which I thought to use but boy it'd be nice to have that little ammo box package.:binoculars: He has a project in Cheyenne this summer so he'll be going there once in awhile, maybe he can stop in the harbor freight for me one day instead of all the pieces and parts I had in mind. How do you recharge the USP batteries on option #1 from your video?

I promise Chaz, I will not connect the Baofeng batteries directly to the 12v batteries, cross my heart, I wouldn't know how. All along my idea was via the Baofeng car cigarette lighter, (seemed safer to me for the electronics in the radio than plugging the Baofeng charging cradle directly into the generator. We've ran our pellet stove on the generator several times and I can hear the fans ramping up and waning with whatever the generator cycles are doing.)

Thank you Dave, that was my idea, snip the rings of and replace with a spade connector, thought I had them here already but the ones I have will not work, thank you for the terminology "spade connector" .

    I thought I had these, I don't.

BCB and @In the Pines what are these called, F2 spade connector on Amazon brings me to choices of "AWG" ?

After going through this thread again and seeing this page containing some posts from me …

Any Ham Radio Operators on FHC?

… I am happy to report I renewed my license after it was two days expired AND I’m also active again.

My buddy even sold me my old Kenwood back…he said he waited for this day…and the radio was just like I sold it to him still in the box with store hang tag, my receipts, my Larson glass mount antennas and everything. He didn’t even use it. It’s the 631. I also bought a near mint tri-band Kenwood and also have two icom mobiles as well as an icom HT. Soon to be getting a 590.

It’s good to be back after a 27+ year absence. Glad I kept my license renewed all that time. Studying for my General.

I'm working on my technical or might stick with gmrs for now. Running boafeng uv-5r handheld, an Icom 2730 mobile and Icom 5100 shack rig.
