Mom used one of those with a colander that was made in a similar shape for canning tomatoes. Running the wooden piece round and round in the colander/strainer would break up the tomato chunks and force them through the screen.
This would have been my first guess , however looking at the wear on the end I would have to lean towards the cone used with a colander.
Good for cranberry sauce, applesauce, tomatoes. The one on the left is at least 50 years old but aluminum so I don't use it anymore. The one on the right is stainless and it's used every year.
I've never seen a cone strainer before. My folks and grandparents used a mill. We have a mill. It gets used a couple times a year.
Foley makes/made a popular brand of food mills with some other knockoffs. There's two in the pantry, one Foley and one something else. They're actually a bit quicker (to me) at their job than the colander and pestle. Did the one your folks and grandparents used have interchangeable plates in the bottom? Have one like that but haven't really experimented with it.
