My wife and I picked up a Solo outdoor firepit while back. Waiting for warmer weather to test it out. In the mean time, I joined a Solo Group on Facebook. I guess Solo recently came out with a pellet base that allows you to burn pellets in the stove vs splits. So everyone has been posting pics of their pellet scores and burning. Interestingly enough, one 40lb bags of pellets last fora bout an hour and a half…. I plan on burning splits in ours.
How about another couple of uses: 1. pellets work fabulously well in bee smokers 2. Turmans work appreciably well in pellet smokers (solid red oak) 3. Horse bedding, but the horse folks seem to prefer softwood
I spread the fines (and any that may have gotten wet and swelled to be unusable) on the lawn, (as well as the ash). Have a big yard....
Used the fines and swelled as speedy dry. Works like the sawdust the custodian used to use in school to soak up puke in the hallway.
The local animal shelter up here uses wood pellets as kitty litter. They are always seeking donations. Whenever I buy a pallet of pellets, I always donate a few bags to them.
Wow on the suggestions above! I heard ashes are good for chickens to dust bathe in. We are 95% pellet stove now instead of wood stove, emptied pellet stove ash pan in the chicken run a couple times. It blows away in the wind after a few days but the chickens seem to like it.
I compost mine. Along with any ash clean outs. Both the vacuum and the ash pan dumps. I also turn wood so I have many barrels of wood shavings that get added in as well as the usual grass/garden stuff. Garden seems to love it after a few years of cooking in the pile. ---Nailer---
Local shop has been selling pellet porch heaters. They are now stocking pellets all season. I used fines/ashes in my winter mix of sand and safe step. The are free and extends the expensive stuff. Darker ash color seems to burn right through the ice quickly once the sun hits it. Most of our ash and fines both go in the garden. Or lawns bald spots.
