Felling another red maple at my "few bucks" score. While making the first cut on the notch, i cut through a screw!!! What are the odds on the first cut? Ever happen to anyone else? Pic shows a second screw i found after cutting through the first. You can see the hole directly above the other screw just above the kerf. I saw the piece fall out right after the saw went dull. Had spare chain with me. Chain now duller than my love life. Rain day tomorrow. Ill spend some time filing it.
Ooof. That would take the wind right out of my sails Can’t say I’ve been that unfortunate (yet) but being a fellow scrounger, it’s only a matter of time before some yard tree bites me back.
To add insult to injury the very last cut with this chain on Sunday i nicked a rock in my woods! I noticed it wasnt cutting as good as liked when i started cutting even though i had sharpened it. Stick with your road side oak and you'll be safe, just dont quote me on that! Wonder if one of those metal detector wands would help?
Last time I was out cutting with my brother he hit metal with his newly sausage injected 471 about 30 seconds in...he was gonna swap the chain out, but I filed it a few times over the course of the afternoon and got it back pretty decent.
Yup , better than nothing. I do have one in my sawmill box ; However My normal MO is to hit metal and then get it out.
Those screws were showing up like cards from more kids every father's day, huh? Those screws were out to get you..........just like those old GF's!
I’m going with 25% on urban trees maybe more. If I think about it it’s kind of rare for me to get an oak log without a metal stain. First cut buzz kill
I've hit screws milling, multiple times. They really did a number on my long chains. Any pics of how bad it really messed up yours? When I touch any metal, it's either swap the chain or swap the saw. I just can't bring myself to keep cutting unless the chain is say about 80% of freshly sharpened.
I tried to make the horizontal cut and it was futile. Spewing dust. After a few seconds i stopped. If i dull slightly ill keep going, but like you stated, below 75% i wont. Here's some pics. Ill break out a new file for the guide. Wish me happy filing!
Ugh! Hate that. Even with a grinder, I'd probably hand file the damage. For me, it's probably quicker because I go slow grinding so as to not over heat and temper the tooth.
Hand filing is the way to go. But I must admit I never did it any other way. I kind of enjoyed the peace of sitting down and doing some saw sharpening. I was excited to see how well the saw cut after a bit of file time. For me, it was all trial and error, but it worked. When I stopped wood cutting and joined this forum, I realized how much I didn't know. Good Lord must have been watching over me.
