Had to cut down my pretty big willow tree due to lantern fly infestation. looked up the btus and drying time. Should I just use it for camp fire wood?
Should use it for compost. IME the worst firewood there is... low btu's long dry time and gets mushrooms unless drying conditions are perfect. It does split fairly easy though
Best use for willow? "Kerplunking in a pond" - Eric VW Just out of curiosity, was the tree infested for multiple years and in a weakened state? I'm wondering why not simply destroy the egg sacks on the tree? From what I've read the pests are killing only younger sapling trees, and weakening the mature trees. No lanternflies in my town yet, but they're closing in.
I had 2 large willows like that in my yard. Down to one as the other uprooted years ago. The wood is terrible for burning, even in the campfire in my experience. Don't invest much time processing as I believe you will be disappointed.
Im with the compost crowd. I unknowing took a few willow rounds a couple years ago thinking it was mulberry. Wasnt until i split them i realized it. They're mixed in a stack somewhere. Luckily it wasnt much.
I can’t remember exactly how it happened, but somehow I have one split of willow mixed in with a stack of oak. I don’t know where in the stack it is. I think about that little jerk at least once a week. It haunts me.
Thanks for the info!! I will use it for camp fire wood and pray that there’s no wind lol. As far as the infestation of lantern flies. It’s been infested for two years and they were laying there egg sacks too high to reach and since I didn’t have a high reach couldn’t top it off. Secondly they severely weakened the tree in that little span. I know this because severe winds never damaged it until last fall when one came through and broke several branches at the top. Lantern flies are terrible trust me.
Years ago, our neighbors in CT had a huge willow fall. They ended up having someone cut it and take it for free….because they were going to burn the wood. To each their own!
