We got finished with the hickory from the Plantation, so we got the 2 stump cut offs from the church tree, the first hickory we put in the shed... We got a nice 18" long round from each, and a thick cut off. Chunks from the cutoff A few months ago, one of our customers had 2 hickories taken down, he kept some of the limb and skinny wood, tree service cut up the trunks for us...almost a trailer load... We got it sorted the other day, this pile is 18"+... This is all -16"...a friend in SC wants a load of the shorter wood. He said he could meet us there on Hilton Head Island... There are 2 different hickories in this pile... I know this is pignut... But not sure about this one...any ideas???
Most of our Hickory’s are Pignut and Mockernut. Mockernut has a courser bark than Pignut. When leaves are out Mockernut has 5-7 leaflets and Pignut 7-9. Tiebreaker is the bark. I’m sure there’s a nut cluster difference too, but I don’t know it yet. I guess if you’re familiar with a pigs nuts it would be obvious.
Jason, I believe you and Chud are right. Mockernut looks right. Don't think I've seen those. Appreciate the link, too. Bookmarked it for reference. My plant app couldn't figure out the bark.
Impressive inventory. My organizing mind wants to know. Do you have a map of the inventory, an Excel sheet or just keep it all in your head?
I would loose the map, spread sheets confuse me... It's all floating around up here... That's a thought. Even worse, I can remember where most of it came from...
When you are really interested in something, the information sticks. As we load firewood into Mom's basement, campinspecter can tell me where he got it two years ago. The same with the firewood going into our basement. It must be a man thing. I would need a spread sheet to keep it straight.
We split some of that pile by the splitter Monday night after the rain... We had these rounds left... Saved a few big splits for the friend that got the other hickory, read that this mockernut hickory makes the best tool handles... Tuesday night, we got the pile stacked, finished the 4th row, started on the 5th That hickory was fairly stringy and tough. Blue Samson handled it, though... We got all the 18" long hickory processed. Have room for 2+ cords more to fill that side up. We have a couple piles of shorts and chunks to work thru.
That is a sweet machine. I like the higher setting vs a conventional hydro. Seems easier on the back.
It does sit at a nice height. I wish my hunny would have started the video a bit sooner. Maybe next time.
Since we are finished with the hickory, we moved the splitter Wednesday evening. Had 10 ash logs in the mixed pile, which we sorted when got the hickory out. Got 5 of those logs bucked and stacked by the splitter before dark. We got those rounds split Thursday night... Planning on finishing the other logs this morning.
Friday morning, we got the other 5 logs bucked and split. buZZsaw BRAD , we stacked this in totes... This one had about 1/3 row left from last year, so we stacked it full Got another tote almost full of ash We topped it off with some spalted beech from the Plantation. This is the cull pile, need to burn it in the barrel or firepit soon. It has the big termites in it...
