The sun must have thawed the ground on the one side. There's still snow between the racks insulating the ground.
Oh well, it's been a few weeks since I stacked any wood

    Why don't you split it?

Birch gets punky real fast if it isn't split. Other wood just doesn't season.

That stinks. Been there done that. :picard: :headbang:

One trick ive done with similar racks is to "tie" them together with a long 2x4 etc and attach with screws. Gives them a little more stability.

Happy stacking, uh i mean restacking! :stacker: :D

I haven't noticed any degrading with the birch or other wood. The racks are single row and in the direct sun most of the day. My boiler doesn't do well with extremely dry wood, it gets to "huffing" which is lack of oxygen basically. It is down draft fan as well. The same applies to the size, it likes big wood (less surface area). That'll be just right for next year.
It's an indoor gasser and the huffing will blow smoke past all the door gaskets. I've had people tell me that I smelled just like a campfire, usually in a complementary manner but it (smoke) gets old in the house.

Ugh...that looks familiar...I use racks something like that for bringing wood into the garage as needed...a month or two back I took advantage of a nice day when the ground was still frozen to retrieve a couple that were still out in the back yard by the main stack. I decided to take a short cut down a small hill and had a rack that was about as much as my little forklift wanted to deal with...I should have tilted back and lifted up a little more than I did, before starting down the hill, but I didn't, and when I tried to, it just made my forklift light in the back...which means the rack was skimming the ground, the result was that when things leveled out at the bottom, my rack dug into the ground and dumped it's load, just like in your picture. The worst part was while I was restacking it, my neighbor that I trade firewood labor with sometimes went by...I'm sure he had a chuckle... haven't talked to him yet, maybe he'll forget about it by the time I see him :rofl:

Always a first for everything. My problem is using reclaimed lumber to build similar racks. The fasteners will let go even...the wood is too soft/degraded. Ive got a half cord stack of locust that let go but hit the stack in front of it.

Maybe the wind did it???

Our previous boiler a Jetstream would huff also , our tenants tried burning cedar shakes and the explosion was so strong it broke the cast latch for the loading door!!!
The Vedolux with lamabda controlled primary and secondary controlled air will burn mill ends with no problem!+
