Helped a friend clean up some storm damage. Glad this was a poplar as I didn't have enough bar with me for a hardwood of this diameter. Managed to get half of it in the truck, 9 more rounds out there to load up......which was a challenge for the 2 20 something boys stuck loading it for me. Great weekend and a great time outdoors. Ya'll stay safe out there.
I've seen/sawed 'em that big. With a real nice sharp chain it makes your saw feel like a light saber.
I was going to say is that a giant chainsaw with like a 32" bar? Then I saw it in that truck...unless that's a huge truck that's not that big of a tree, big yea but not that big . I have seen them well over three feet.
Back when the poplar peeler market was strong around here I had world's of that stuff hauled off of my sales at the upper limit for them, which I think was 32" at that time.
How do you determine that? I'm reminded of the many times I was told my saw and bar were not big enough to cut certain trees. One that comes to mind was once I was going to cut a nice ash tree and was told I could not do it. I did cut it and then measured to find it was 33" or 34" (don't remember for sure the exact diameter). It really was no problem using my 290 with a 16" bar.
If I cut from both sides and can’t buck a round the bar is too short. Now for felling I like a bar that can reach through with one shot. I know it’s not necessary. It’s more of a confidence builder for me. All these dead oaks are full of enough surprises
Can't recall the actual measurement of the big ones I milled here: Scored some poplar They weren't as big as those last pics posted though. Well, maybe at the flare above where the landowner is standing:
It can be done but with a longer bar its just easier. Having multiple saws with multiple bar lengths im spoiled. Many years all i cut with was my 290 with a 16" bar until i met the fine folks on here!
The way it fell across a small holler, the 066 with the 36" bar would have made the job much easier. The Echo CS8000P did the job nicely with no problems, other than the crawling from one side to the other to complete the cuts.
Running a 20", 27" is on order. Didn't take the 066 with the 3'r. Just too heavy for what I thot was going to be a quick job.
That's crazy size I have never seen them as big as this one, let alone 32". Photos my grandfather showed me years ago of his logging days in the 30's in WV had massive trees. Would have loved to see the world back then.
Agreed Brad. Lack of planning.....or more like lack of information given to me or I would have had the 066 and been done in half the time. The Echo CS8000P had more than enough muscle, left a pile of shavens, but I'm getting too old for all that back and forth crawling around
