Just got 130 meat birds in at 5:10 Tuesday morning. Gotta love when the post office calls that early. With that many, I have them separated into two different boxes. Site isn’t letting me load pictures at the moment. Will try later

Better an early call than a late call, no? The 130 might have been down to 120 with a late call....

Oh absolutely. This was only one day after hatching - less than 24 hours. They are safe within 72 hours but I agree, the sooner they are exposed to feed and water, the better. 5:10am was actually nice. A lot of the times it comes 20 minutes before I'm supposed to be at work (6:45)

Back to my broody hen..... I am getting pretty excited here. I swore to not interfere with mother nature, but for the hens sake, (she is good but definitely matted feathers, lost weight ect) I candled one egg, which wasn't even part of the 5 I originally marked and it was shadowed 3/4 of the way. A normal unfertilized egg wouldn't look like this, as they can stay unrefridgerated up to 2 months. I'm guessing she is sitting on between 8 & 10 eggs. Fingers crossed at least half are gonna hatch, but being my first time, I really have no idea, I didn't want to candle any further. I expect chick's sometime in the next week (I'll be away but have someone watching for chick's and other chores) and quite possibly more on the way near or at Easter, which would be so cool.

Yeah, cedar is pretty much a weed around here.... and since I have a sawmill we use quite a bit of it for our farm construction.

Gonna have to take a few days off of the building projects, because we're sposta get 4" of rain in the next 24 hours....

I'm planning to get it framed up (and maybe even get the roof on) in the first part of next week while we have some nice weather days.... hopefully...

Got the beds mostly filled. Have some low spots to top off. 20230323_192220.jpg

Ran out of light tonight. 3 of the straw bales will be for potatoes.

Repurposed a barrel I had since I was a kid. I'll fill it up by pumping water from the creek. Base is a piece of ash, sitting on black locust and sassafras rounds. I'll run drip lines from it. 20230312_154643.jpg

I posted in wrong thread. Can mods move this to gardening please.

Meyer Hatchery in Ohio. Been using them for about 6-7 years. Prior to that I used Murray McMurray out of Iowa. I only made the switch one year due to a bird flu quarantine in the midwest.

That’s a lot of meat birds, feed and poop!!! Are all 130 for you and your family or are you raising them to sell? We have had 30 for about two weeks. Considering raising another batch to sell later in the spring.

Back in the 90's, I grabbed a few meat birds from young chicks also. 20-25 maybe....not manyu.

Those danged things grew so fast I swear that they grew right out of their leg sockets! Huge birds. They would walk to another spot in the yard I had for them and once they got to that point, would lay down!
