Very windy March day here and the rustling of the leaves still on the beech tree next to my wood storage caught my attention. They held on and are still there. Typical of the species. IMG_2836.JPG IMG_2838.JPG I split the BL rounds there today. Wonder when they'll fall off?

That's an easy way to identify beech. That's just what they do. When they start to grow new leaves, the old ones fall off

Just cut down 3 beech trees up close to the house. CSS got about 2 cords of it.

Come and dig out as many as you like from my woods. 3rd succession trying real hard to come on strong in areas. I intend to keep it in second succession as long as possible.

Nice Brad! We have a bunch up in VT, but they get some type of canker on the bark and don’t last long. I’ve got a bunch of splits from my neighbor and I have a few more to cut up. Not the biggest rounds, but they’ll do just fine.

The white oaks I planted years ago do the same thing. The dried leaves hang on until the new growth in the spring forces them off.
I didn't know beech was the same.

I was working in my woods last weekend splitting some dead ash and noticed a huge beech thats literally punk on one side. Pileated woodpecker activity with lots of wood chips on the ground. Any day now it'll snap off. Looks like it will put out leaves too. There's been a few that have gone over like that in recent years. Beech bark disease victims.

I planted 10 red oaks some years back, most of them drop leaves in the fall like normal, but 2-3 them hold them until spring...I thought maybe its a male/female thing?
