Got rained out Friday, I've been eyeballing this tree, hoping nobody else will notice it. Its decently far off the road and almost too far to be worth the effort. Unless you have wood hoarding issues... Nasty 60mph storms blew over a ton of trees recently. Makita 7900 took a trip to Michigan so I brought extra bars for the 362 in case I got pinched. Quite a ways to carry or roll the wood even with a cart or wagon. Started with the top, easy to carry longer sections. Hoofing all this back to the truck then cutting to 18" then throwing it into the truck. Dog on watch in the cab. Somebody was here before cutting on a snapped oak, can anybody ID it? Red oak? Looks like they said ell with it and left a lot of wood where it lied. Had to go back to the truck and swap chains this wood is extremely hard. Second load carried back to the truck. At this point I'm feeling it and I've had it. Its a catch 22, its a pain to get it back to the truck but if it was close to the road it would be lonnnng gone. Would like a heaping load but this mule has had it. Before I leave, kick leaves over the saw chips gotta keep this one quiet. Can barely notice the tree is cut. Made it back. Lots of small stuff. Sounded like I was unloading baseball bats when unloading. To be continued.
Nice get, I’d be all over that hickory too. Well worth the effort. The oak looks like black oak to me. Bark is rougher than red even at a young age.
Hickory is worth the extra effort. I had to wheelbarrow my latest hickory grab. Only thing I don't like about it is the hickory borers make a mess usually.
Nice FHC eye in catching that hickory. Its not easy schlepping wood to the road, many years of experience here. Reminds me of what ill go through for BL around here. Havent perfected yet. Yes as Eric said i agree with black oak. If you scrape the bark it will be yellowish under it.
I'm curious, is this tree on private property or did you ask the landowner? Some states seem easier to go and cut fallen down trees.

Scenarios like this have me considering a Honda capstan winch. They do come dear but would seem to open up new hoarding possibilities. That said, I don’t think the average bear is looking to carry rounds anywhere near that far, so you can probably work that one at your own pace.
A winch would come in handy with a tree like that. I also thought about setting up a rope and block to drag it to the road. Your truck obviously has the pulling power.
Permitted land... Its all up for grabs if dead and down with permit. No tractors, winches, pulling on trees with truck. Tools allowed are chainsaw, wagon or wheel barrow, perspiration, gumption, and callused hands. It only takes a few stinkers to mess up a good thing so I play by the rules. My guess is nobody is going to mess with the hickory. A red oak I got last year was uphill from the truck sat for a good while... Way easier . I ups it to him. I figured I could get it back at the GTG at your place.

I thought I was the only one with wood hoarding issues that cuts and carries stuff from way off the road where others dare not go. But....worth the effort for primo stuff, and a good workout. Carry on Ohio!
Nice find. I still have two large pignuts that I need to get after. One is a recovery PITA, but lots and lots of wood there. The pig is easier to split than the shag (in my area anyways).
