Can you direct me to a Thread or tell me what you guys use to clean your chains before and after grinding them? Any homemade recipe's that I can make at home? Thanks and have a great day.
If I recall, Pete uses a green degreaser before and we-40 after. I use a degreaser as well and use bar and chain oil afterwards.
Any buildup or burning on the chain is a sure sign that it either needs more oil, or needs to be sharpened. I don't bother cleaning them before sharpening, other than blowing it off with the compressor. Pour a little bar oil on them before returning them to their packaging, and my saw case. They clean right up when you start using them again.
Purple power/super clean works great. Spray it on and then hit it with a big stub brush then rinse. Blow it of and put it to work or spray some wd40 so it does not rust up.
I like to leave them grimed up - lets me see the first tooth that I sharpened when it returns around the bar
A few swipes with a small steel brush won't hurt anything. I personally don't see the need for anything further than that, but wd40 or silicone spray will de-gunk the pitch on them too.
Thanks for all the advice. I will try soaking then wire brushing the pitch and sap off of the one, then blowing it off with air so I don't start a blaze!
I take the air compressor to them while they're on the saw, I also take a brush to the chain when they're on the saw, this will take a chit load off. Before they go on the grinder I'll wipe them down with a cloth, I do have a small container that holds some simple green I can soak the chains in before wiping them down with a cloth. This is the container I have the simple green in. http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/...mi/9015450-P?navigationPath=L1*14924|L2*15045
Pallet pete said he uses simple green. I dont clean them but cutting g good green white oak makes im pretty shiny
Air if the chain is reasonably clean just to remove excess oil ,etc . If the chain is really bad ,like when cutting in dirty wood , simple green followed by air .
Curious. Why are y'all cleaning the chains anyway? I know pete does it cause lots part of his dealand it looks really professional to get a sharp clean chain back. But my chains are usually not that bad. Cutting wood tends to clean them and unless cutting really dry wood with a dull chain or really doady wood you almost never get much on them or at least i dont notice it?? Just wondering is all.
