Unfortunately there's too much conflicting "science".
With no one group condemning and snuffing out the "science" of the other group, like has happened so much lately with other "things".

We tried going Daylight savings time in the 70's. Maybe we try Standard time for a year and see how it goes. No harm with trial and error. It's only clocks. they can be changed. Lets do each for a year. Results will speak for themselves

You got that right. Around the middle of June, it starts getting light about 4:45 am and dark near 9 pm. but in Winter, mid Dec, Daylight is just before 7Am and dark again at 3:45 pm. We need either permanent DST or Atlantic standard time. I am 76 yrs old now and some times I don't bother changing the clocks. I just have to keep my appointments. My Alexa will give me reminders and that is about all I need.

Seriously? If you’re 45 longitude , it won’t change if your est all the way to pst. The earth doesn’t rotate and faster on the east coast as it does anywhere else in the world.

a common accepted practice is add/subtract 4 minutes to sunrise for every 70 miles you travel west/east, respectively.

    What ?
The earth spins a hell of a lot faster at the equator than it does at the poles, guy.
Same with a wind generator, the blade tips are traveling hella faster than the hub.

Earth rotation speed has nothing to do with DST. If you are at the equator you don't need DST/ST because the amount of daylight in a day doesn't change with the seasons.
DST has everything to do with attempting to manage the best use of daylight between Summer and Winter. (for whom involves multiple issues)

Because the earth rotates, time zones are fairly wide and there is an hour (or so) difference from one end of a time zone to the other for sunrise or sunset time, Depending on what side/end of a time zone you are on can influence whether you prefer full time DST or full time Standard Time, if we were to go to a system that has no time shift.

The earth spins east / west not north / south.

If you are further north or further south at a specific longitude likely only your apathy changes. Which is still latitude.

Gramps used to say the cows don’t care what time it is as long as they get milked every 12 hours

No… but my fathers dad had a farm near ST J; milked Jersey made butter, cheese, and of course syrup… It’s just all old farmers have sayings. I think and if you heard it it made sense… You know the opposite of politicians

    I'm confused..... happens often.

How can one "spring forward" when it's still winter?

I would prefer it getting light earlier in the day, but even more I would prefer to just stop changing it.

Got up at 1:58 am, next thing I know I've wasted a whole our and it is after 3

The only good thing is that cats' stomachs never got the memo when we fell back in time and they would start bugging me EVERY morning at 2:30 am to be fed. Now their stomachs will be in sync to be fed at 3:30 am
