I try to get as many good splits from the round, then split knot down the middle. If it's small enough, we will put it on top of the stack. Big knotty pieces go in a tote for all nighters...
Had a nice day Saturday, with temps about 70°, so we got busy bucking logs. Mostly cut off the forks... Miz Carol started cutting back some crepe myrtle bushes, I stopped for a bit and helped her, loppers were too slow, grabbed the pole saw, got that done, put grapple on tractor, cleaned the brush up and then moved about 7 more logs to splitter area, just bucked those on the ground. Side view of rounds pile... Splitter view of rounds pile Close to 175 rounds, about 25 logs bucked. Made a dent in the log pile... We need 1.5+ cords to finish the shed we are working on. Hope to get that done next week after work. 7pm under the lights...
Got the lights set up Sunday night since I'm working 7AM-7PM this week. And split a small pile Monday night, stacked that pile, still didn't have enough to finish 6th row. Fired up Blue Samson @ 8:15PM, split till about 10:40PM. Made a dent in the pile of rounds Made a big pile of splits Then realized I needed get the big fan in the shed, so went to stacking these splits. Got the 6th row complete and almost 1/2 the 7th row done. Walked in the house @ 11:45PM. Sure didn't want to hear that alarm @ 5AM this morning. But of you don't set goals, nothing gets done...
Since we are close to the end of the 14' shed, I pulled the splitter and conveyor out about 5'. I got smart, chained the conveyor to the splitter, used the truck to move both at once. Now the pile is right outside the shed. Got more done last night I've had folks ask why we're taking the bark off...well, here's 1 reason... A young flat head borer... Right now, they're just under the bark
My hunny and I only stacked the pile last night. Finished the 7th row and started on the 8th... One day I hope to finish...lol...
Yep, when we had chickens. I kept an old pot around the splitter. We would find some big ones, throw them in, and the race was on...
Nothing like being a party animal when you're 60...... About 8:30PM, I decided I would rather go wood than listen to my hunny and her 2 sisters on the phone (read "drama")...headphones and my CCM music = my happy place... Got a fatty on Blue Samson... I split till 12:30-1AM...this is what's left of the big pile... Made another little pile of splits My headphones died, so shut splitter down and went to stacking...8th row almost done Came in about 2:15AM...Glad it's a short walk home...
Well, cut that big pile of rounds last Saturday, kept pecking away at it during the week, finally got it all split yesterday. Got a big pile to stack now... Hope it's enough to finish shed, if not, we'll just put the splitter close to shed and finish. Need to work on conveyor...
Love the nice consistent splits. Mine are all over the place but at least they do burn. Great job as always Jeff.
The splits are nice. Do you have to do much resplitting to get that size? What are you doing with the scrap pile? Do you bag it up for kindling? Looks like a bunch of nice oak strips.
If the rounds are big, like the one on the splitter above, it goes thru the 4-way, then each quarter goes thru 4-way again. We probably split a little smaller than some folks, but it dries faster and some of our customers are older. The scrap pile is mostly bark on the right side of conveyor, going to dump that in a wash-out. There is a picture above (couple days ago/different pile) has splitter strips/chunks/uglies...that will be sorted. Don't bag any, may start giving some away with each load of wood.
Got the big pile stacked, had enough to finish the big shed, IIRC, it holds 5 cords, it's 7.5' wide x 6'4" avg height x 14' long. Had this little pile left to start on a tote or pick up load... The pile of kindling and uglies, got to sort it out The big bark pile...
Jeff you give new meaning to the term "tight cord" Are you gonna start selling bark by the cord too? Thats a lotta bark!
We left air gaps in it...lol...I'll ship you some bark...... Got a big trailer load, packed down with tractor Got this left to clean up
Yep, we have some dirt on the woodyard that is really dark. We dumped this in a wash that was starting on the logging road that was made.
