Buddy of mine has a Gen 1 Ridgeline and he loves it. I fell down the rabbit hole on those and see varying reports of people saying the rear differential fluid needs to be changed somewhat regularly. I've seen anywhere from 7,500 to 50,000 miles. Any feelings one way or the other on those reports?

The manual has pretty stringent maintenance schedule if you are operating it in what they consider severe service. The diff is 7500 miles the first change if doing regular towing or driving in mountains. Then 15,000 miles there after. If you aren't doing the above regularly then the maintenance minder will tell you when.

For folks with limited garage / driveway space- is this easy enough to DIY or is this one of those jobs where... it CAN be done by yourself but in reality you kind of need to get it up on a lift?
This thread is pretty good- Plenty of nice reviews/reports and lots to consider. 2 years away from a new car purchase but daydreaming for the time being is free.
    ...despite the inflation. lol.

It can be done pretty easily without being on a lift. Easier if you lift it up on jack stands depending on your physical size. You would need to put it back down to properly check fluid level or have all 4 corners on jack stands. Its a simple drain and fill like any rear end but, its not just any rear end. Honda AWD systes are contained in the rear end, not in the transmission. They uses a specific fluid and nobody makes an after market version. Its not that expensive however. We just did our other AWD honda, an HRV, and its just over $10 a quart from the dealership. That vehicle takes less than 2 quarts. Not sure on the Ridgeline as we haven't done it yet but will soon.

I apologize for not watching the video….

Some have had good luck fulling the rear diff by using a funnel with an extension hose; and running the house through the drain on the in bed trunk to the rear diff.

We just did the CVT and rear differential last weekend. Easy. Both are a drain / fill ordeal. With the CVT, you put 4 quarts in, start it, shift it into each gear for 10 seconds or so and back to park. Shut it off and add fluid till it runs out the check hole. Repace the plug. Maybe half a quart or so after the initial 4. Just like an axle on a "real truck". Lol

Pretty sure they had to because of government regulations after the Firestone/Ford Explorer "rollover crisis".
