Maybe this weekend. I have to find more chestnut or white oak in the area first. There’s a couple dead red oaks I spotted right along Aircraft Road, but I’m only interested in white oak species right now. Must be another form of the mania
Found a new white oak prospect this morning on my morning commute. I may have to start working it on my lunch break
I agree it doesn't look like your typical white oak bark. One thing I noticed about white oak around here is the bark varies quite a bit. Not just as the tree ages, but even comparing two trees of similar sizes in different locations. It's hard to tell from the low-light pictures, but the color of this one was a light gray like you'd expect a white oak to have. Once I cut into it I'll know for sure.
We looked at a blowdown yesterday. Guybsaid white oak, leaves and bark says post oak...planning on retrieving it next week. It's way back in the woods.
Normally I wouldn't care either, but for the time being I'm just trying to scratch the white oak itch. Although white oak is widely dispersed here, it's not often I get any. Red is much more common, by a long shot. That and I still have some HUGE red oak trunks to get after right next door to me.
I'll let you know this afternoon. I agree the bark looks more like red oak family, maybe even black oak (which there are a few smaller ones close by) Once I buck a round to check the color and smell, I'll know for sure.
ive noticed that on whites too. The only two sub species ive seen (and scrounged) are swamp and chestnut.
I think the chestnut oak I got yesterday was a hybrid between chestnut and white. The bark on parts of the trunk looked exactly like chestnut oak, but the furrows weren't as deep. Then on other parts of the trunk it looked like regular white oak with smoother bark. But the wood was brown like chestnut, which I've never seen on regular white. Dang promiscuous oaks
Yup. Im sure you'll be sniffing away too. One of my favorites. Whats with this WO obsession all the sudden Eric? Do we need an intervention? I didnt read you response to Jeff prior to posting.
I'm sure my wife will be forever grateful if you intervene I can't explain the obsession other than the novelty of it. Although I've been burning some lately and have the itch to get more. IMO red oak is great firewood, but white oak is superb.
Reminds me of a typical black locust score of mine. Tangled with vines and prickers. Time to break out the machete.
Yeah you’ll intervene all right. Bring Eric a photo scrap book of every downed white oak tree in Ct along with GPS locations. We know how you operate
I see how it is....Times get tough, and all of a sudden Oak's good enough again. You guys run out of Locust?
Humbled red oak it is. I cut 5 rounds and walked away. Still debating what I want to do with the rest. There's a couple more red oak logs up the road that are straighter and more manageable to cut/load roadside. I was really hoping for white. I guess when you’re a hammer everything’s a nail.
Red Oak is like the one true friend who has your back in a dark alley surrounded by hoodlums. Black Locust is too busy running in the other direction!
