I’d find a bobcat or other Vermeer dealer around and see if they have a forestry mulcher for rent. Lot cheaper if you’re comfortable running a machine.
I paid 10% consulting in 2003. He paid for himself, easily. Had a high bid come back from one of the people he markets to that was 25% more than the next highest. Local outfit that was trying to buy it acted stupified about how they could pay that much. Getting them to trim the tops down to 6' height or less helps with the messy look a bunch. Also puts more of it on the ground so it can begin to fertilize the forest floor more quickly. I talked to the cutter and found him amicable. Barely into his 20s and working like a dog in my hills. He had a gallon of gas, a gallon of bar oil and a gallon of water with him (it was July). My only coplaint about the whole deal was some residual damage that was not necessary. They ruined a few good leave trees getting the logs out. Otherwise very satisfied how it went. I credit the forester for that.
Never any lack of work to do on a place. I used J.S. once for a service around 2007 and he pulled a fast one on me counter to my instructions. Never again...
I would recommend a consulting forester always on a harvest of any size. Mine more than earned his fee and made me money.
