Sure am glad we have diesel 20KW standby as it's been powering us since last Wednesday. Trees down here, power lines down and no power. Been using the biomass stove exclusively to heat with, sure glad we have it. I've never ran it this long before. I do shut it down every other day and check the fluid levels and once this 'fiasco' is done, I'll be servicing it. I've burned around 100 gallons out of the bulk tank so far. Times like this make me thankful I bought it years ago. It's a lifesaver. No one around us has any power, poles snapped off and trees down Have a mess to clean up. Lost 3 big ones, 2 Mulberry and one large maple. Just got the Internet back a few minutes ago. Been dealing with a cell phone which in my opinion is next to useless. Fine for calls and not much elae.
I had a lovely 12 days with no power from derecho 2012. Fun stuff. Heating was no issue as it happened July 2nd IIRC.
Sorry to hear of the issues in your area. Glad you are prepared. Gonna be a HUGE wake up call for many in NY if our misguided "leadership" gets all they want, concerning an electric ONLY NY. It's unfortunate for me that although a gas pipeline runs through the property, nat. gas is not an option. So, I'm already electric dependant. Which is why we also own a generator.

Looking at a 12k solar array and probably an equal amount of batteries to start if not double that amount. Got the permit packet on the wind/solar farms going up around our place. Closest tower is almost a mile away, but still.
There will NEVER be an EV in this driveway while I'm alive. The tree huggers can KMA. Besides my little buggy gets 40 mpg. My wife's Burb is another story but then I don't gas it, she does.. Up town a few have EV's but they are dead. No juice there either. Have solar panels on the RV but that is it.
Our power was out once for 13.5 days. At 14 days the electric company would have to cut checks. Go figure! I'm glad you are set up to deal with it. I know it gets old even with the set up you have. Hope power comes back soon! Out here they want everything to be electric. Apparently even the generators will be battery powered because they banned those too.
I heard on the news this morning that there’s still 30,000 without power in southern Mi . Hopefully soon you’ll have it back . Yesterday was real bad with the ice in Mid Michigan. Fortunately power never went out . Not a tree hugger corncob but my volt lifetime average is 192 mpg . Although the volt isn’t set up for bi directional charging , it won’t be long and an EV will be able to power the house for many days even talks of weeks .
Actually the new Ford lightning is already set up for bi directional charging and with reduced rates for EV owners it’s a win win . Any update on your restoration time corncob ?
Right, but if you need power for more than a little bit, this is just basically an $80k gas powered generator. I have a total of ~$600 invested in 2 generators, 1 small inverter, and 1 larger unit that can run the well...seems like a better plan for a long term outage to me. Sounds nice for tailgating, or sporadic small scale power needs out in the woods though...

Fords ceased production of the Lightning about 2 weeks ago due to battery and electrical issues, FYI. My BIL is a big wig and Fords so I get the skinnies. DTE just sent an update, they have no restoration estimate now. Having issues with substation equipment so we are and still are on diesel standby. I consider us lucky, lots of folks around here aren't so lucky and it appears that those using small generators (like are sold in box stores) are breaking down as they are not really meant for continual use, plus they have to be fueled with gasoline and the gas station up town has no power either. Out here an EV really don't work anyway because of the distance you have to travel to even get to a grocery store and according to the local Farcebook chatter all the EV's in town are now 'bricked' Never be an electric vehicle here. Not practical. Only electrically powered stuff I own are my cordless tools. Still out, who knows when it will be restored. My feed line is laying next to the driveway, pulled it right off the pole. The underlying issue is the fact that utility providers have not been proactive in maintaining and upgrading their systems. All it takes is an act of Mother Nature and bam, no power. Got a l0t of chainsaw work to do here in the coming weeks. My new Echo CS as well as the 028 and MS will be working hard. I switched all my 2 stroke engines over to Tru-Fuel. Glad I did actually. They run much better on the Tru-Fuel 50-1 pre mix. Especially the 40+ year old 028. It actually idles now.

"The Bolt’s battery powered his refrigerator, lights and other crucial devices with ease" This is not a big load at all...if you have a well pump, it would not run it...most are 220V...and if they manage to ban all the gas appliances like they are trying to, then this method of "backup power" is of very low value...it'll just power a fridge, some lights, and charge your phone/ipad for a few days...better than nothing, but certainly not a great backup plan for more than a few hours, especially when its cold out. As it said in the article...his fireplace didn't provide any real heat. That's what free standing wood stoves are for though, right?!
likely take 20-50 years or more to rebuild the electric power grid and billions + billion dollars to what the greenies envision. And they bitch about any type power generation other than wind and solar while looking the other way at the polution caused in mfg of said components. ( most which have apx 20 year life span) Can't have your cake and eat it too.
Sorry to hear of a bad situation but glad to hear that you are equipped and are riding it out. Whether it's a permanent standby generator or a portable generator with a transfer switch or panel interlock, IMO generators are must-have for emergency preparedness.
Just got an update from DTE. No restore date presently. They are out of poles and I'm out of patience. What a joke. Just goes to show you how fragile the grid actually is. Least we are powered up with the standby which is working 24-7 and hard. Not a cheap date however.
