I got a little bit of cherry a few weeks back. All about 8" and under. I was surprised how stringy it was splitting by hand. I will take maple and oak any day over that stuff.
Cherry is like that. Twisty and stringy or nice and straight. 50/50 chance IME. I scored some couple weeks back and most was twisty. Load i cut last week popped easily in half with the maul. Bigger rounds in both cases.
It's definitely hit or miss. Some pops apart easily like soft maple and then there's the ones that don't. Either way, you can't beat the smell in my opinion.
And another of theirs, "Simple Man", then comes to mind. What great Lynard Skynard music! Oh, and Super score on the cherry, jrider...
Split about half the cherry rounds i had on hand. Back of my truck smelled nice. This was nice and easy splitting stuff. Primo straight grained destined for bundle wood. The lesser quality went into another cherry stack im filling. Third half cord to be filled and im guessing another cord or so scattered in random stacks.
