So if red maple is soft wood, what is hard maple? I got some (what I was told was hard maple) from my tree climber buddy and it was pretty tough and also heavy! I'm not good with IDs, it looks similar to what I got a few years ago
1st pic is American beech and a single red maple log. 2nd and 3rd pic are red maple. Sugar maple will have a yellowish pink hue to the wood (vs white on red maple) and the heart is small or nonexistent and rarely creeps out into the meat of the log
Yes all but the Bottom log is American beech in that first picture. I looked past the first picture figuring that were all the same type, but they are not.
Sugar maple aka rock maple. Not sure if there are any other that are classified as such. I know Norway is better then red but not as hard as sugar. I compare it to ash in all aspects.
Thanks. Ive heard of it, but probably wouldnt be able to ID it unless pointed out to me. I beleive its in my area and i may have scrounged it thinking it was some other maple.
