I got a tri axle dump truck load. Not a log truck cut into rounds. Measures about 14x8x4 should be around 4 cords split.
Seemed like a lot of red oak. They are clearing a huge wooded area to build a complex and widen the highway. Guy is selling the logs. one of them had Purple Heart wood. Kinda like mulberry but maybe something else
I’ve got a couple tree services that bring me wood like that. I can go to another one about a half hour from me and he’ll load my 7x14’ trailer for free. It’s got 4’ walls so I should be able to come home with 2 cords each trip He’s also willing to use my places as a dump yard when he’s in the area. So I get receiving wood this way. Just curious, did they charge you for that load? Yes/no is fine enough for an answer.
I used to get free wood dumped but when the price of fuel went bonkers wood turned to gold around here. $450 for that load.
That’s not bad. both of these cost me $800 each. About 5 1/2 -6 cord each. this is all cherry with a couple hickory mostly ash with a couple elm and hickory. The elm is 35+% moisture.
Yea a 50% increase is pretty substantial for just a year. That's assuming he was $100 a cord last year. Probably lots of log suppliers up your way?
Yeah he has been 100 a cord for a long time. I like buying from him because it’s all tops so no big diameter wood, he delivered in an F350 so no huge ruts from a heavy truck. I can’t blame him for raising the price he always has a list of people waiting. There are others but they are difficult to deal with. EAB has stepped up within the last year here I guess I’ll have to get to scrounging.
Sounds like it might not be bad to just pay the extra if you can't scrounge up enough yourself. No tore up yard/driveway is nice. He probably should've been raising his rates slowly the last couple years instead of all at once. Are you saying with the EAB, that they didn't kill all the ash the first time thru your area? I thought it started at a port in new York? Not positive on that. Been moving east since. Last i looked it was in Nebraska area and still moving west but that was a year or two ago. I've also read where the ash trees will still grow up to a certain size before they can become infected. Does that sound right or am i getting it confused with elm. I know elm around here don't get to maybe 12" diameter max before they're dead. Usually 8"-10" is about the biggest i see.
I’m a couple years ahead so I can defiantly scrounge if needed. Time right now is my enemy. Wife and I both work full time and the 8 and 5 year olds take up whatever is left over. Really not sure about the EAB I had noticed a bunch of ash that died off maybe a decade ago but recently have noticed a ton of trees that have been picked away at by woodpeckers. We have had some pretty mild winters the last few years maybe that has something to do with it? Most all of them 12” plus diameter. Found and 8 cord grapple load not too far from the house for 750$ Now I’m questioning buying it with the amount of wood to be had.
That's a tough call when it comes to time. Srounging firewood is definitely time consuming and with an 8 and 5 yo...... Buddy of mine/guy i work with has two kids. One 10-11 and the other 5. He's figuring out the same thing. He doesn't burn wood but running a business can get challenging. I know the ash around here have been dead long enough now that they are rotting from the ground up. Sometimes they'll twist the whole root ball up when they fall but lately I've been seeing them broken off 5-20ft above ground due to rotten stems. The nice ash firewood is starting to dry up around these parts. At least the big ones. Gonna make it harder for firewood businesses. They had it easy the last 10+ years with the dead standing ash.
