Found a piece in a discount box. If your going to scoop ice cream, might as well get after it. It turned very nice.
Nice piece of work Greg. Gotta burn the FHC logo in it. Id love to find some for firewood. My holy grail score.
YES! Thought i had some last Fall, but turned out to be mulberry. Do you get a lot of it or hard to come by?
There is a lot on this property. I don't normally get much, but the owner of this property gave me permission to take a lot if I wanted to. I have went to MO to cut loads before. Honestly, Osage Orange is tough to process, lots of twisted limbs; and they tend to fight back. Can be a lot of work for not much wood. MoJim used to say, "If your trying to make a living selling Osage Orange, you're working for short wages..." RIP Jim!
Ive seen pics of it on here and how it lives up to its name "hedge" being all tangled up plus the thorns. I noticed how straight your rounds were. Is that rather unusual for it?
Yes, this was growing in a thicket so it was unusually straight. The owner pushed them in a pile with a dozer, trying to reclaim some of his farm land. If it is a lone tree, or in a fence row, let the games begin. If I think of it, I will try to get some pictures of a few next time I am out there...
Just got home… I’ll get some here in a bit… … Gots to get my beans boiled for my chicken’s first… edit…
Dang Other than the block in the bin, I never see it around here! but I’m told highest btu native species in PA
The nearest we have here is Manzanita at 32M BTU/cord. It burns so hot we only burn it on the coldest days. You have a LOT of potential heat in the back of that truck!
I have a very little bit of Osage Orange, super rare find here. I was interested in how it would burn, but with the way this hickory is rocking this room, I'm a bit wary of the O.O.
It is here in western Kentucky but very spotty!! I actually have some in my fencerow that I have processed! It will flat eat you up getting a couple truckloads and then if you have to clean up the limbs, another tough job!! Lots of branches that are stiff and sometimes sharp
If you have it.. then yes to the high BTU's... Absolutely love the stuff... Between it and the Thorny Honey Locust... a couple other mixes in there quite abit of BTU's... But its easy getting right now... Making hay while the sun shines... Don't have to mess with brush or the tops... Just thorns and dirt... The worst part of Hedge is its ability to throw sparks... (aka firebugs ) and the difficult lighting of a full load of that stuff... I like to light it with other wood... Just make sure you have draft/air control and you'll be golden... Yep them limbs are fun to deal with since most are a bushier type tree...
