I like when their meter actually reads dryer than mine. I’ll usually joke that the wood deserves a premium if it’s that dry:p

Hope you don't mind be using your "premium" up-charge line on my next tester.

What about an axe/maul? Or do the customers re-split the sample split themselves? (seems unlikely for many people)

In a way, dry wood should get a premium. One has to store the product for 6 months to 3 years depending on location and climate. That's money sitting on the ground that needs to gain value faster than inflation and any average investment

I asked my kids if they wanted to try and sell some firewood next year. I'd buy the log truck loads of wood and I'd buck it up. Kids would split, stack, sell and load out. Semi load of oak is $100 / cord. My youngest thought $150/cord split was a good price to sell. I asked him if $50 was worth his time splitting, stacking, unloading....and waiting to season the wood. My daughter piped up, hell no, not if we have to split the profit and wait a year to get paid.

I always carry at least one chainsaw, a maul, my cutting gear, and fuel/bar oil when out on deliveries. Have had people ask me to cut up fallen trees or split rounds left behind by tree trimmers. Can make some decent bank in a hours work and have already burned the diesel getting there for the delivery.

Yep, the first year or two is rough having all the money, time, and hard labor just sitting there not paying you anything. But then it becomes a struggle to keep even with what leaves the woodyard. Mid February to August is when I get ahead and then Oct-Dec it is usually five out to one in ratio--the crazy period.

So you re-split the test split(s) for them? Or let them test on the outside?

California used to define "seasoned" as split for X number of days. I can't remember if it was 60 of 90, but it wasn't very long. Today they no longer mention "seasoned" or moisture content.
Can you imagine trying to burn oak that was split 60 days ago?

I get this too. I have a lot of wood on my property but the stuff I need to cut is down a slope so it is a lot of work. If I see a tree down on my way to the main road I'll stop and ask the owner. The usual response is they think I should pay them $100 for the privilege. Some of these trees are still there three years later, untouched and rotting into the ground.

He doesnt understand the concept of dry firewood. :picard: Ive dumped a few whellbarrow fulls of past theor prime cookies/chunks etc. and they are still sitting in the little alcove in the back of his house. Havent seen or smelled smoke from him in a while either. Wondering if something happened to his so called stove. Of course its been a record warm "Winter" here. It made it to the low 70's in parts of CT yesterday.

If you saw what he had rigged up to burn wood in your jaw would drop :jaw:
