Well that makes it sound even more like the stuff I had then...best I could guess was maybe red pine...I dunno, wish I had more of it though...this winter has been a real dud other than about 3-4 days, hate using my better wood to dribble a little heat here n there...
I don't think we have red pine. Loblolly, shortleaf and virginia pine here. Eastern white, but usually yard plantings. This evening he said he's pretty sure of the fenceline it came from. I'll have to go over there one day and do some further investigating. If it's sass, I'd like to see the tree it came off of, cause I've never seen one that would be that big.
That would be great, because the stuff I got came to me just like what you have there...dead and barkless, already cut/split...no leaves no nothing...and the boss didn't remember anything about them either, I suppose he really wasn't paying any attention, and he clear cut them all, so nothing left for clues...
Don't usually see much catalpa around here in the woods, mostly a yard type tree. But....this is a farm, so no telling what could have gotten strewn around. There are a couple large honey locust with thorns, which you don't see much of around here either (not sure what that would looks like other than seeing it on here....could that be it? But then again, piece seemed light for size...) And some swamp white oak down along the creek, can't say that I've ever seen any/many of those. Hopefully he doesn't throw those pieces (he had 2) in the fireview before I can talk to him tomorrow about getting a piece. My curiosity is hooked....
Those splits have not been burnt yet. I will get a piece soon, and be able to do a smell test, show a fresh split side face, and hopefully a clean end cut for everyone's viewing pleasure.
Brad, do you mean you split that from rounds today? Does the inner wood have the typical sassafras smell, like the leaves and twigs? Do you know if a split like that of sass was dried (ready to burn), and you split it in half, would the fresh face smell? I was going to get that piece today, but had to work late on fires. I'll get it sometime this week.
That was a seasoned split maybe 9-12 months dried as i took it from the stack. I split a couple to size for bundle wood and it still had a faint aroma.
Finally got to get a fresh split face... Doesn't look that much different than the original pics, just a bit brighter. Used miter saw to get good crosscut for end grain... I went and worked on the same stretch of fence that I posted about a while back, and busted a piece of elm limb. Like some said about this wood, I'm thinking that it's elm, the red variety....
Yes, I did, forgot that. Nothing remarkable. Definitely not like sass. The piece of fresh red elm I have smells somewhat 'medicated' is the best term i can come up with. The wife and I agree that it kinda smells like chapstick, between the blue label and black label kind. I know that sounds weird but it's the best I can describe..... This piece of dry wood in question has just the faintest smell at all....
