Here’s a first for me, black walnut. Cut to lengths and left curbside for the taking. Not a wood I’m crazy about burning, but I’m happy to scratch this one off the list. The one short crotch piece I’m saving for an old retired coworker of mine that’s into wood turning.

Nice! One of my favorites... Quick drying and easy to split... plus love the fresh split smell... Even better when the bark comes off... :handshake:

That’s a pretty small score of highly valuable black walnut,…. Probably only worth $2ooo or $3000.

Haha. I wonder if I make a few blocks on the bandsaw if I could make a small fortune on Etsy ;)
I’ll probably save a couple chunks for woodworking. Maybe make some pistol grips or something. Walnut isn’t too prevalent here.

A pile of logs I purchased recently had a 18"X12' black walnut in it. Have been giving half a dozen sticks to each of my customers to taste.

I've never thought it was great for firewood. Better to sell for some of those big dollars.

Agreed! It's mediocre at best. Leaves lots of fluffy white ash.
I do love the smell too. But if possible, I'd rather use it for crafts or woodworking of some sort.

Thanks for your input on that. I think I'm going to salvage whatever I can for woodworking, and make kindling with the scraps.

Not at all prevalent where I am. I would probably dismiss it as 'brush' if I happened upon.

Here's a few slabs I milled from a walnut root ball. Some will be sold as gun stocks, but most as slabs. 20230104_115631.jpg 20230105_174147.jpg 20211018_151648.jpg 20211018_151700.jpg 20211018_151713.jpg 20210704_140954.jpg 20210704_141006.jpg

It never ends, man. You need a mill, skidder, a barn, a hoist, a kiln, 23 acres with no neighbors, a machine shop, a bunker...
