I thought I would share the bathroom remodel I've been working on. How long have I been working on it you ask? Rather not say. I had delays with waiting for my plumber, and when kids sports started up, work slowed down, then hunting season started and work stopped. Plus we had to find a vanity that worked for us (you'll see why) and Im not a contractor, we also were paying for it as we went not going into savings. Also, we were still using the space as work was going on and its an old stone house with old house challenges. Thankfully my wife is very patient. (She also held up things trying to decide on this that and the other.) Here's how it looked Cant really tell with the pics but floor is sticky tiles that they also put on the counter. There were gaps and they weren't straight. The floor also rises up as you come into the bathroom from hall. Notice the spray insulationin the wall behind the toliet. Someone used that stuff everywhere. The "vanity" was built into wall and the plumbing underneath was a mess and not correct. They had old boards and insulation laying in there. As I removing it, I was sure I would have some sort of critter run out. The faucets leaked out and were OLD.
We initally planned on putting the washer and dryer in the closet. But there just wasn't enough room and I didn't like the layout to make room. So that was nixed. We also planned on using the same wall/ counter but during demo we saw the stone from old roof line and decided to keep it. The wall also hid the wiring.
Since we exposed the stones we went with a floating slab. Friend has a mill and he had a live edge piece of catalpa that I liked. So we waited as he sent it to his buddy to be planed. Handy brackets installed for the future slabwood.
After moving/ adding some lights and outlets it was time to work on the wall. We went with shiplap in white and used a wide gap. Also didnt use a primer so the knots would bleed through. Trying to have a rustic yet clean look. Of course ceiling wasn't straight. I also don't own a table saw. So I had to use jig saw to rip the boards down. I became very good friends with Mr. Jigsaw during this project. I did buy a cordless Milwaukee nailer. Well worth the money. Saved so much time. Wall with new lights. No trim yet
Tried to rework the stone behind the toliet. I didn't like the way it looked but my wife said it looked good. Sons were deciding votes. It got covered up.
Built out the window. Made it more of a farmhouse style. I dont like to mess with plumbing too much. Thankfully I have a friend who is a plumber. After waiting 2 months, he finally had time to do the work. He changed all the lines to PEX back to the main and redid the drain properly. I couldn't of bought the tools for what he charged me. With that done I could finally get the floor done. Of course some of the subfloor needed replaced. And of course whoever put the subfloor down used different sizes. The small rise coming into the bathroom I left be. I would of had to cut the door down and have a step into the bathroom from the hall. Went with luxury vinyl. I really like working with this stuff. Scribed the floor to fit at the wall. Flooring and paint can change the look and feel of a room so fast.
Closet became my wife's area to do hair and makeup. Left the light from old closet in and added lights to the wall. The old light is on the back wall. It adds a nice look at night. We used an antique dry sink for her vanity and towel storage. Need to finish the side closet yet. The vanity took a little time to find. I knew had to do some engineering on it to fit the slope of the old roof line and I couldn't do that with any from big box store. Also didn't feel up to constructing one. After looking around we found an Amish made one that I could modify. Basically I cut the back to match the angle. Nothing like taking a saw to new vanity you just bought. The foundation has higher and lower stone peaks, so my cut was a little off and the gap is a little wider than I wanted at the bottom. Leveled an than lagged it to the studs from the back. Got the sink, top, mirrors and a medicine cabinet from same place. Prices were really decent. Added faucet yesterday. Waiting on glass doors for tub. Not doing tile above shower. Decided to do tin instead. When doors get in it'll get finished.
Looks great. Renovating always takes more than you think and when it is finished it looks great but most people don't know all that goes on in the background to make it look great.
Looks terrific! We are remodeling here so I know the work you put into that. Just seeing how you cut the flooring around the rocks shows the attention to detail that went into that project.
Thanks everyone for the compliments. You are spot on with that comment!. Some folks on my wife's side were not impressed with the work put in. They only said what still needs done. And my mother-in-law told us that we need to put more coats of paint on the shiplap because you could see the knots.
Need to do a little caulking and paint touch up, but this is done. Really happy with the way the catalpa counter turned out. Added color changing led lights underneath.
