Griz, here is a thought for you and your son. Have you ever thought about purchasing some sort of Stihl saw that was in need of a rebuild? Something the two of you could rebuild and share the learning/teaching experience and satisfaction of seeing something that the two of you built from nothing into a running saw!

PullinMyPoulan @PullinMyPoulan and his son just completed such a project together! He speaks highly of the experience, results and the time he and his son spent together working on the saw.

Just a thought, I'm sure there members here that could find you a decent Stihl in need of a rebuild. Perhaps you could be lucky enough to find a nice 028 Super! Very strong running saw.

I did something similar--'got a saw that needed work with plans to fix it for my dad. The hard part was that I couldn't ask his advice because I would have ruined the surprise. When I gave it to him it was like saying, "look what you taught me."

 

My son and I learn alot of new things together just about whatever comes are way.When your tucked in the woods like we are we have alot of opportunity to learn new things because everything needs maintenance at one point or another. It sure was satisfying for him and I to do and something we will not forget.It's a saw that won't be getting away from us for sure.We are going to be putting a new chain brake on it and 20" carlton bar and chain from baileys.We have had to wait on things that it has needed which will make it more worth while.Thanks again KRL for the piston.In the future we plan on cleaning up the other cylinder and using the piston in it.We are just not in a hurry for that right now its running good.
