Well, it finally happened. Someone called me and sent a pic of a pile of bucked tree with a free sign. I saw it was EWP and headed over. They are clearing space for septic, and want the wood gone. And they don't care about the yard there, because it will be all plowed up for the install. Seems I was the only one there for taking. Everything needed to be noodled into slabs that I hit with the maul. Splitting the rounds was not happening, the maul just sunk in. We ended up with less than half a cord, which will need to be run through the splitter. I have every intention of going back for a few more hours of cutting. The bigger rounds (27" ish) are full of straight wood. This (maple?) stump was there also. I couldn't figure out the cut pattern. But the sap on top was sweet tasting.
Great score! I always like having some pine on hand. Great kindling or great splits to toss in with hardwoods. Also great to bring down the pile of coals in the stove.
That would make it go toward the road though...since the wedge is there I would assume they wanted it to go away from the road? Strange for sure...
Was it maybe some cuts they made after the tree was felled? I see there's no hinge or fibers showing so they must've cut the top of the stump off after the fall.
Hard to say...I thought maybe they are going to leave it there and use it to hold a pot with some flowers or something?
Would the jack have gone on the close side, pushing the tree toward the road? I thought about saving some, but I have some (more than I'll use in a long time) on hand. However, if anyone needs some, there is a lot more noodling to be done, and I'll gladly collect some. We went through a cord this past fall, I didn't save any pieces for those really cold times when the coals pile too quickly. I will be keeping a bunch handy for other-than-shoulder season-use. I like the chair hypothesis. They do have kiddos there. In fact, the house used to belong to my 3rd grade school teacher. Evidently she was well known and loved; the homeowner says she is regularly asked if the moved into the 'phelps-house'. And she was well loved. Her (son/nephew/family member) played for the Hartford Whalers. She brought memorabilia to us from time to time. I kept a legit hockey puck for many years. And, I'm itchy to get back to that score.
Good point. I should get after the rest of that primo wood. If it weren't for this dumb thing called work. I am grateful for that score though. GIG. SCA
Same here! Its dark when I get home from work, so that only leaves weekends for firewood. We gotta do what we can when we can.
It was a beautiful day out there today. I managed to cut and split a full trailer load. Pic of that didnt take. But I have been noodling the logs and then splitting firewood right off. The x27 is awesome! (Pic below) I talked to the man of the house. Aparently they'll begin hauling the pine out in April, so I have that much time to take what I can. I was also worried about the amount of noodles I was creating. I offered to rake them up and move them, but he said they were just glad to have the wood being taken away. I might still grab a rake and tidy up some. After all, I'm there with the FHC sticker on my back window..... He even offered to park his dump trailer nearby, so I could huck wood into it, and he'd gladly haul is home for me.....
Bet it smelled great. Ive only processed a small of pine over the years. Thats what stinks about having a small storage area. Cant have log length dropped off.
Nice looking splits! I noodled a big Doug Fir a couple of years ago on a lady’s property. I offered to rake it up. She said she’d mix it into her garden compost. A guy driving by asked her if he could feed it to his goats. She let him take half of the noodles. Seems like noodles are pretty useful
