Saw some wood on the side of the road on my way home from work yesterday. I stopped today on my way home from the transfer station and talked to the home owner, take all you want he said. I was able to muscle a few rounds into the truck. The scrounge is about a half mile from my house so I went home and got the Fiskars X27. The frozen rounds popped pretty good in the frigid weather. There was ash but someone else got most of it. There was also this black maple, the color seems to be something that grows on the bark. I think this is either sugar or Norway, possibly a hybrid. In a half hour time I got a nice truckload. I will go back tomorrow with sledge and wedge, and possibly the saw.
Nice little grab Thom I was out cutting some dead sugar maple in the woods next to me this morning. You know it’s cold when your eyes are watering and it’s freezing right onto your face, despite the salinity The black bark looks like sugar maple to me with some kind of fungus growing on it.
I'm glad my truck started today, it must have been pretty cold there as you're not far from me. Nice grab, hope there's more there when you get to it!
Could be sugar maple. Bark looks like it. Ive seen that coloring on SM bark before. Cant say ive seen black maple before. Either way great score. I love finding scrounges like that. Even better that close to home. Warming up for tomorrow even though the crisp air felt great today.
Was out of town on business all week, just got back last night and had the day off today. Went back to this scrounge and most was still there, I got another nice truckload of sugar maple.
Sugar maple makes such nice splits when knot free. Great firewood too. Glad it was still there. You going after more tomorrow?
I love sugar maple, and I don't get it very often around here compared to silver or Norway. Ash is always desirable too. Great score!
Went back today and got a fourth load, brought my saw and cut up The crotches and rounds where the large branches were, noodled the really big stuff, took every last piece of wood and cleaned up my noodles. I am very happy with this scrounge, a bit over a cord of nice hard maple.
Nice! Always a good felling to finish up a score. The dense areas of sugar maple have some serious btus. A pita to process but worth it in the long run. How much wood in your current inventory?
