This guy is trying to produce a kit to make a round grinder do square:

With this, you'll need working knowledge on what a proper square tooth is supposed to look like. There are some issues that need worked out IMO.

And this vid is about the best you can get for a how-to:

What's 3 more hours drive? Last I saw we had like 40 plastic pallets. One of my suppliers sends their shaft seals to us on them

ok, as cool as that was seeing his explanation and demo,

the limbing portion where he started bucking was also a learning moment. Leaving the top back intact and then plunging through at the half way, cutting through and then up-cutting it..

reference 12:40 when he’s cutting “hard wood”

    (yes, same video)

 Prevents pinching. Most times I use a wedge after getting far enough down to do so. He is very proficient! :dex:

Yeah he is. You watch a ton of videos and pick out little things like that.

I’ve been using a wedge as well, I’ll be practicing this technique this weekend.

This is what was left today to cut up.

This is what was done already.

this is what is now done.
Those big rounds in the back laying down are the 28” bar. So I’m guessing they were close to 34-36” in diameter.

I got a full chisel chain for the 28” saw. I’m considering doing this with the Full chisel for the 28” chain.

this is now what’s left. A lot of this was buried in the snow pile.

This is what showed up about 4:15 today.

quad axle full of cherry wood. I guess it’s been sitting in the guys way for like 5 months now. Likely would have been 6 trips for me to pickup with my dump trailer at 125 miles round trip. So about $300 in gas and at least two days of my time. He charged me $300 delivery.

The plan had been to cut Saturday and Sunday. Saturday was just a comedy of Murphy. So I’m pretty happy I got all of this done today. I even got the snow pile hauled out of the drive that was creeping out in size.

I started the saw at 10:15 and had to sharpen the chain once after a piece of elm. Something just destroyed the edges. Same thing happened again at the end of the night. Since it was after 5 pm, I just cleaned up and put everything away before dark set in. By the end of the day, the MS180 was a welcome change to tossing the 362 around.

I’ll source enough pallets for 12 cord of wood. I’ve been scrounging them on the road what I can bring home. So far, I’ve been able to bring home 6 pallets. Three of them cheps. Personally, I hate them. But free is free.

I can rent a dyna SC16 for $275 a day is what’s on my notes. It’s $1850 a week. I may do that for a weekend to process the cherry since it’s all so clean and straight 16-20’ pieces.

You have anybody to help you run that? It takes at least 3-4 guys to really make those processors hum.
    1 to run it
1 to just help with the feed table and clear issue with the splitter/conveyor
At least 1, if not 2 too keep the table loaded.
Smaller straight logs help smooth things out, and lessen the need for so much help...and like with many things, there is certainly a learning curve to 'em!

I’ve got a crew of 5-7 people willing to help me for the short periods I’d need it.

Beer, bourbon, rum, steaks and cigars is the cost.

with the 20-30+ cord the one 8-acre project is supposed to give me, we are considering “sorting” the logs out and the big stuff that can’t go on the processor will be done by me on a splitter.

when we have a 5-7 day supply of good processor wood, rent the processor for the week and hammer out a good 150-200 cord. Then I’ll stack and let it season once the splitting is done.

yes, I did practice this technique today too. That worked slick.

That 362 is definitely more demanding than the 180.

I went to use the 180 today and looking at it and thought, “where’s the saw at?”

Well I'm a little late to the welcome, but welcome to the land of BTUs. By reading this thread it appears you went all in. I've enjoyed reading your progress, and look forward to your continued wood hoarding adventure.

    Started splitting today…

actually picked up a Fiskars X27 and a menards special moisture meter so I wasn’t really guessing.

    This sized piece

Broke down to this size. First time using a splitting axe like this. Had to adjust the effort down seriously so I wasn’t chasing pieces all over.

and had readings from 17% to as much as 28%.

Quick tip: a bungee cord or two or spare tire around the round your splitting will greatly reduce the chasing of splits.

Wish I could be part of the crew. Free adult beverage and steak gets a full 12 hour day out of me.

we have a regular crew that works together really…

we’ve now built 3 decks and a garage for those in the group.

the “homeowner” generally sits back and feeds the crew and provides materials to get the job done. We can knock out some decent sized projects quickly.

What else do you do when you can’t work outside.

been emailing insurance since it was commented that you couldn’t get insurance if truly off-grid.

That’s the same moisture meter I have. Only one I’ve ever used, so I guess it works ok. Problem is I’m having trouble finding new batteries for it and it’s been so long now I’m not even sure where it is

Yeah, I was wondering about those too. I haven’t taken up the challenge to find them yet.

I honestly was caught off guard by it’s small size from what I was expecting based off YouTube videos and seeing what others use.
