Wood id

Found this today in the stacks and had no idea what it was. I got it during an Asplundh scrounge a few years ago and dont have any others like it. Ran it through the splitter and still not sure any ideas? Cherry, red oak, something else? Doesnt really smell like either of those but is a hint of something sweet.

That was my first thought but then the bark seemed red oakish with the fibers.

 

First picture I would have said cherry too, but bark doesn't look like cherry that I typically see.

 

Splits look like cherry but the bark doesnt. I dont see oak. Kind of stumped myself.

Most of the black birch around here is smoother with the lines but it def has a birch look. Im gonna crush up some bark tommorow and see if I get the wintergreen smell.

 

I know theres cherrybark oak but Ive never seen or processed any that I know of. I googled a bunch of other fruit trees but none of them seemed close.

 

The way the weathered end of that split got darker as it dried almost says mulberry, but the bark and freshly split face says otherwise. The wood grain definitely looks like cherry to me, but again, that bark is off. I wonder if that's some weird ornamental Japanese cherry yard tree?

 

Looks like oak to me. First picture of the split round. I'm not sure cherry splits with those sharp jagged edges. Cherry is not usually that "fibery" and is more brittle. Bark doesn't match any oak I've seen though.

 

The bark looks like the mulberry we have here.

 

It sure looks like cherry to me. The immature bark of cherry sort of has a birch look to it. Here are some pictures of a couple of cherry trees on my place showing mature vs immature bark. I know for a fact that these are cherry and I don’t have any black birch on my place.

 

I burnt a piece last night but it didnt give off the usual cherry smell. Im keeping the other half for further examination haha.

 

That immature weird bark at the base def looks like it. Ive never seen a cherry do that but clearly it can happen.

 

You could always send it the FHC lab for further examination.

I sent a split in and got a baggie full of ashes in return!

I was doing some cutting in the woods today and noticed a big buckthorn that looked exactly like the mystery wood. Im 99% sure thats what it was now.

 

Great when you can solve your own wood ID mystree. I dont think buckthorn is around here. If so i wouldnt be able to ID it.
