Oak around here is getting around $1000.00 for a triaxle load. Would you Gentlemen buy a load of Cherry to burn for half that price? Be mindful that that would be the primary species burnt for 2 years.
Friend if there was room for two loads I’d have wedged 3 in from the logging job up by my cabin. Standing dead Oak 800 a load and 8 miles from the house. 5 of those miles on state forest rd. Needless to say it showed up with a jag on.
On the money side of things I think it's definitely worth it. The only pitfall I can see coming is that IME burning all cherry tends to leave you with heaping piles of charcoal, which you'll have to burn down or shovel out. In the past whenever I had a glut of cherry to go through, I'd mix it or alternate it with either a soft wood or something that burned really hot, like soft maple or poplar.
If you have to buy, then it is worth it. Just have to stock the stove sooner. Keep that in mind for the cold winter nights.
If i paid for firewood yes. Itll be ready to go in a year while you're still waiting for the oak to dry. While cherry doesnt have the btu's of oak, it still kicks of decent heat.
I like cherry because the wood and smoke smells good. Also it lights up easily. Throw oak on an old coal bed and it’s possible only the coals burn out and the oak gets charred. Throw cherry on an old bed of coals and your back to having a roaring fire.
$500 ? Absolutely. Firewood sellers get more for cherry here than oak. Must be a large firepit and smoker market here for cherry because oak has more BTU. My experience with cherry is it coals more than I'd like, especially if not seasoned all too well, but for that price I'd make it work. I'd rather have cherry than red maple for sure.
Hmnn, ok. See if the driver can stack the logs vertically on end. Much less room required and you get the fun of knocking them over
Yes I have. I think maybe a stick or two of maple, and I won’t turn down the occasional maple from someone’s yard. However if I’m going up in bush looking for dead wood or paying for a permit Oak is all I go for. So I’ve been spoiled a bit, my logger friend sometimes calls me a wood snob for only buying Oak.
The last two cord I got was a mix maple, oak, birch. The 4 before that were all red oak. It’s pretty rare to get 4 cord of one species tho.
I was excited to get some cherry last weekend. First decent amount in a year or two. Splits nice, smells nice, burns nice. For reference, I am drowning in red oak. Other than the odd clinker here and there, I love burning cherry. Leave some large splits for overnighters.
