We had -15f in our backyard this morning, but it was -35f in Eveleth MN yesterday morning. It was -27f there this morning. So far it has really been a warm winter. I just drove my pick-up out on the lake to the spear shack for the first time yesterday morning because the slush on top had finally frozen down to the good ice.

We were still living up north of here the winter of 1996 when it got down to -60f in Tower, MN 90 miles West of us. That morning we had -45f within a mile of Lake Superior which modifies the temperature within several miles of the big lake.. In cold like that you can feel the chill seeping into the house walls in any area the insulation is thin. It was still warm in the core of our home which was build around the wood stove and masonry chimney.

I recall one weekend snowmobiling in the Northwoods of Wisconsin, that it was so cold that our sleds were making snow from the exhaust. The water vapor green the exhaust was crystalizing into ice. I forget the actual temps,. But it was somewhere around 35 below zero range. It was one of those weekends where a taller windshield was necessary.

Ive kept the cabinet topped off near the stove....usually holds 24 hours' worth. Also brought a little more wood and stashed it next to the cabinet. No reason not to have a bit more inside for a cold snap...

Going to run laundry tomorrow...just to have it done.

In January 03, or most likly 04, we were up by Smugglers notch Vermont riding. We were lucky. Week before it was -35 air temp. My buddy was up, his truck locked up, transmission wouldn't go in gear. The guys who had the cabin that weekend backed in their trailer, and drank and played cards. They actually parked the groomers, too cold and dangerous. Things break at those temps, bolts, steel edges, crazy stuff.

they are calling for -35 with the windchill for Friday at home, but it has been colder. Mid Wisconsin. Course Saturday - Sunday they say it could 30 + above. Typical yo-yo temps for my area.

Had a similar day at Burke in the 90’s. Word on the hill was -60 with the wind. I got frostbite. It was insanely cold.

    Probably the same day!

for those that don’t know those ski areas are probably 50 miles apart in a straight line

I would not doubt that they close anyway - especially if the winds are as high as predicted. The chair lifts just aren't safe.

Got an email yesterday saying our dump would be closed on Saturday for weather. And that is saying something - I don't recall them ever doing that before and I've lived in the area that the dump serves since 1988.

    Here in Southern Vermont
Friday forecasted -19 low and a high of 24.
    Saturday-24 and a high of 10.
Sun back up to 10 low and 36 high.
Two days of bitter winter then back up.

Chickens have heated water but I think I’m going to put a heater in their coop. They’ve been fine without it so far this winter.

I have two problem areas to watch. My bar has a sink that the lines run up inside an outside wall. Last year I put in a heat pump hot water heater under it in the basement and crammed heating tape up in the cavity where the lines run. We’ll see.

Then the cottage which sits unused mostly for the winter has a shower on an outside wall that has frozen up on me. When I put the shower in, I did insulate, use pex, and wrapped the lines. But it still froze up once.
This year, I’ve left the heat set at 50 degrees.
    Fingers crossed.

Leave water dripping a bit to help prevent freezing pipes.

I've never needed to do that. The only pipes on an outside wall here, are kitchen sink pipes. The cupboard doors will be left open.

Artic blast or Polar Vortex, Which is it?

Or is it a bomb cyclone?

    I'm confused!

Depending on which weather station I have heard all 3. An article on CBS had Artic blast and bomb cyclone in the same sentence?? :loco:

They made a movie on Artic blast. Solar eclipse caused a cold air shock wave that froze the earth!
