Looks like a fun time Mike. Do you reserve it for the same time every year? Get a discount if you stock the firewood or bring your own?

We reserve the cabin twice a year. Once in early November and usually in mid-February. We had to settle for January this year. Still, two totally different experiences.

Wood for the woodstove, is supplied. No discount.

Bet you're glad you and your crew aren't up here at the cabin this weekend! Going to be a tad bit chilly this Friday-Saturday.

Alot of wood would find its way into the stove.

Alot of cribbage would be played too. Too cold for being outdoors for very long.

Toilet seat can be a shock to the system at those temps.

Remember, there's no such thing as bad drinking weather.

True enough. Was talking with someone yesterday about how everyone is freaking out about the cold weather coming in this weekend. That's how I remember the weather being growing up so nothing new, just haven't seen it in a while and it gives the news outlets something to sensationalize about.

I went through many typhoon drinking parties while stationed overseas, so I wholeheartedly agree with your comment!

My dad who was a Marine based in Okinawa for a time in the early 60's told me about the typhoon parties. Said everyone on base had their "typhoon fifths" Haha

Looks like they've upped the ante a bit. Now the wind chill for Friday night is possibly approaching -100 just 12 miles from me (as the crow flies). From doing some digging, apparently there have only been three recorded times when the wind chill hit -100 (or below) in the U.S. (There's also a chance of breaking the state record for ambient low temperature.)

When the wind chill hits –100°F:

There are only three times in U.S. records that the wind chill on the currently used scale appears to have hit -100°F. On January 16, 2004, New Hampshire’s Mount Washington Observatory, notorious for its harsh winter conditions, recorded a temperature of -41.8 degrees and a wind of 87.4 mph, leading to a wind chill of -102.6°F.

“It is unlikely that a lower wind chill has been measured at a long-term station in the U.S.,” says climatologist Brian Brettschneider, who covered U.S. and Canadian wind chill records in a blog post.

An automated weather station at Howard Pass, Alaska, recorded a temperature of -47.5°F with sustained winds of 53.7 mph at 10 p.m. on February 21, 2013. The resulting wind chill would have been minus -99.8°F. However, the winds were measured at a height of 10 feet, rather than the standard 33 feet, so the actual wind chill was more likely minus -105°F, according to Brettschneider.

Looking beyond such remote outposts, the lowest wind chill confirmed at a U.S. town or city (adjusting for the currently used wind chill scale) is -100°F at McGrath, Alaska, at 6 am AKST on January 27, 1989. The air temperature was -72°F at the time, and the wind speed was 7 mph.

What site did you pull that forecast from? My general weather searches won't show Mount Washington itself

Right from the Observatory's 'Higher Summit Forecast' page. Figured they're right in the middle of it and their job is to monitor the weather, so best to get it straight from the horse's mouth.

Mount Washington Observatory | Higher Summits Forecast

The latest update is pretty incredible, I don't recall ever seeing a windchill forecast reaching possibly -110! I believe that would be a national record (for actual monitored windchill).

That's what flowing rivers are for.
