I'm curious what others would offer for this lot of firewood (priced at $850)? I contacted the person on Saturday and he needed this firewood out by Tuesday or his landlord would take ownership. He is moving. Sunday I offered $150 per cord (I'm not sure how many cords are here but he thinks 3). A trailer can get relatively close but in my mind that's roughly 9000 lbs of wood to move in single digit temps with some sort of walk between a trailer and wood pile. Needless to say, I heavily offended the guy. Hardwood out here sells for $350 per cord BUT this was on a short timeline, you have to take it all, it's 20 miles into the mountains, and it'll have to be moved via a wheelbarrow. Thoughts?

BTW - the guy said that it's Ash, Honey Locust and Maple, it's not the "junk pine that clogs up your chimney"

Time is in your favor. It'll be good for you to get it at that price. It'll be spiteful for him to leave it there.

To me it depends on how seasoned it is and how much available time you have. I guess you have to assume it’s all green?

Given all the work on such little notice, I’d be happy paying $450 but not much more. At least it’s all split! And you can cherry pick—there’s no way he expects you to take all of it.

Of course some of the members in other parts of the country who consider honey locust SS wood probably wouldn’t pay $1. :hair:

Since you have very little access to hardwoods in your area, plus it’s already split & you know what hardwood sells for there I would think $225 would be decent offer, if you can get it for $150 great but lowballing straight away has probably ruined any chances of further negotiations & potentially losing out on a good score of hardwood.

Moving with a wheelbarrow will take some time & the 40 mile round trip will take some time & fuel.

I guess it depends on how badly you want some hardwood to burn.

I would tell you to take a hike if you offered me that initially.

Hey, I totally get it's low. I should explain more, it's 3 hours from my house in Wyoming to this spot. I have family in a nearby town where this is being sold. This spot is 20 miles into the rocky mountains, it's a steady incline uphill. I would also be renting a trailer to pick it up. If I were in the same town and it didn't need to sell today, I would offer more. More than likely, the landlord will take ownership of it.

For a 3 hour drive, I'm not sure I'd take it for free. Unless I could set eyes on it before making the drive (I've been burned by online pics), it would be a hard pass for me. But I'm a seller. If I was burning myself and hard up for wood, I'd probably offer what the OP did.

Wouldn't even mess with it for that kinda work involved/money spent unless you can stage and sell it from your relatives spot and triple your money.

There's gotta be easier less time consuming scores closer but if i needed the wood and could get it all in one trip..... maybe.

From seller perspective, it’s a lot of work and time to accumulate 3 cord of wood. Not your problem

From buyers perspective, on short notice, and cold temperatures and travel. Its value is X how far you are from the wood is not really the sellers problem.

As a landlord, what will happen, the tenant will leave it, and I’ll pay somebody 100 bucks to come get it out of my yard; if I don’t have a woodstove

consider 20 foot u haul truck take in 1 trip

What you offered seems fair to me. Driving time, fuel, trailer rental, effort of loading and unknown condition of the firewood would turn me off as a seller. However, if you are the burner and determine it is worth the hassle for a bargain, go for it. Yes, distance photos never tell the whole story which is why I take closeup photos and video for my ads. Never trust what type of wood it is without visual verification. People that have to move out quickly don't hold all the cards.

Well, after getting a better description; your offer was probably inline if not a bit high for your situation. I would probably pass on it being that far away but again it depends on how bad you are wanting a stash of hardwood.

You would probably be in it for $300-350 cord with your time, fuel wear/tear & trailer rental.

The only other option would be getting it & staging it at your family’s place & getting a load whenever you go visit but that’s adding additional handling time.

Does your relative know anything about firewood? If yes, maybe have them contact the seller and go look at it with tape measure in hand,& not letting on that you know each other. If it measures out to close to the said amount and is good stuff have them make the same offer you did.
Is your relative a wood burner? Maybe do it on shares in exchange for help with the loading and transporting. The whole thing is a bit of a logistical nightmare given the short time frame. But unless the seller has had other tire kickers the time thing is on your side. Every day he is closer to losing it all for no $$.
If he has to leave it all behind maybe you can get a better deal with the landlord. But obviously there’s a wood burning device in the house and landlord probably won’t be to concerned with getting rid of it. Probably sell it to the next tenants.
I think you made a plenty fair offer for your situation given everything involved to get it into your stacks.
Darn sure wouldn’t sweat it if it don’t work out.
After all firewood does grow on trees! Another good score will come along

I for one can appreciate the whole lack of decent quality firewood in the area where each of us live. I’m sure Mag Craft can too. I went through Douglas in October after I met you here, and paid extra attention to the tree situation thereabouts. Tough situation for a wood hoarder.

The relative is my sister and she has a 14 day old newborn (there's no way I'm getting any assistance haha). Unfortunately, they live in a small neighborhood otherwise I would have done the wood shuffle over the next month. Maybe I'll see it on CL next week for free!

I'm fortunate in that I've made friends with a local tree service and they've dropped off two Ash trees so far. I keep an eye out for deals/opportunities but they are hard to come by. I recently showed up to a "deal" to learn the stacks pictured were pulled off Google images......ugh

He waited until the last minute and wants someone to come solve his dilemna on his terms ?
    $450 sure beats $0.00

Maybe the landlord will give it away under the same rush job terms ?

Guys get really weird if they feel like they're getting lowballed though, and will often take zero dollars over coming down on the price they think it's worth. Dumb, but common.

I wouldn't even pay $450 for that, especially in light of all the rest of the details...(but we also have high quality hardwood all over the place around here too) but if you would be happy with it at that price, fine, but I sure wouldn't go up any what with all the miles n work involved!

It didn't sell yet....I can't go any higher on my offer, just not worth it. The price on CL was reduced to $650, I would have to assume others have the same reasoning. In the Denver area, a lot of wood is offered for free. In my neck of the woods, it's hard to come across any hardwood without paying a pretty penny.
