Your pics look very much like what my land looks like. Most of my woods are on hillsides which makes it interesting cutting the wood and getting it down the hill without having it roll into the road or hit a building like our house.
That’s a pretty narrow yard.! But I suppose 2 swipes with a weed whacked and you’re done mowing for the week
Rain ended early afternoon and i was getting cabin fever so bucked up the tree from yesterday. 361 & 194 doing the honor. Impact loosened up a lot of bark. Ant damage only a couple feet up. Meat was all good. Fresh woodpecker activity. A lot will get stacked right there.
Back yard only front and side yards are bigger in terms of grass. Takes landlord 20 minutes with tractor. I weed whack.
Bump. Only felled a few trees in the immediate vicinity. S/S the wood right there and have been pulling as needed. One tree left that was still good so the 462 did the honors today. Off target to the right. First pic sideways...oops. Stack to the right is two year old red oak. Ill get it processed and stack there again. A few other standing dead closer to the house yet. One blew over in a recent storm.
Oww, smacked your stack! Probably so weak and rotten it didn't do much harm. Nice to not have to clean up the mess that happens when they explode up top.
Its only two year old oak!!! Maybe some fungi and loose bark but thats it! I wanted it to land closer to the covered stack of ash splits (second pic) as thats where it will get stacked. The meat is all good on the ash and the bark seems tight. Most will be bundle wood 9-12 months from now. yeah nice to leave the mess for mother nature to take care of.
Looks good Brad. I agree with leaving all the tree remains out there. Saves so much cleanup. Bark, sawdust, twigs and leaves, unwanted uglies, splitting remains.....saves a lot of work. You splitting by hand out there?
I will be. Itll get SS right there and retrieved when needed 9-12 months from now. Pretty splits are bundle fodder. Rest general cordage.
Decided to run a tank through the 261 yesterday. Managed to buck the whole tree. Did a little SS too. This one tree didnt put out leaves last year. Most of the bark stayed tight. I leave it in the woods until needed for use due to limited storage.
Nice work Brad. Yesterday definitely felt like a great day to make firewood. How many more ash trees you figure you'll get from that spot?
I didnt feel like it but forced myself to get out there. 4-5 closer to the house. A couple have blown down. Wish i had processed them sooner, but its more fun being able to drive to the score!
Start looking on CL or FBM for an old garden tractor and a small trailer. If you find something we can grab my trailer and go load them up. For what you are doing a setup like that should work for you.
Yes, those work, but I guarantee that a 6000 lb load of firewood will break pretty much any ATV. They are more fun than the tractor though, and 4wd is easy to get on those.
I'm also looking for a 4wd quad. Prices have actually come down lately on used. My tractor is usually skidding the trees up the draw to the landing so not always available for trailer duty. I actually use my lawn tractor that has a locking rear diff and a small trailer to move most of the wood. Eventually I willl "need" one of everything, right?
You don't need to go crazy on a 4wd ATV either. My 30 yr old Kawasaki bayou 300 has hauled out a lot of wood from the forest. It's not designed to pull down 2' DBH pines though. That's why it's currently not running. A 400-500cc machine will do practically anything you ask.
