I want to ask a question. One of my neighbors has over 10 acres of land that he only uses for hunting. I would like to go in there and clean up all the fallen trees just don't know how I should go about it. Any ideas
There isn't anything there. It's only woods. No house . The only time I see a truck is during big game season. I was probably gonna leave a note on his truck once hunting season opens up
Just like a hunter shouldn't go in to ask permission dressed to hunt, leave your chaps and saw at home when you ask permission.
Yup x100, ask before you go in there. I can't see why he wouldn't mind you taking fallen or dead standing wood in the hunting off season. definitely ask, out of respect
If you go to the court house you will be able to find out who owns it. With a little research you maybe able to find a phone#. Or you could send a note to them asking them. Gary
If you ask, specifically say you would only cut the month or two after hunting season. Most counties have online GIS which gives the owners name and billing address for property taxes if you can find the parcel on the GIS map.
Go to the county office and check the tax roll for the owner. Contact him and see if you can set something up. Explain to him that a properly managed bush lot will help him with better wildlife habitat not to mention reducing the chance of bush fire. If you sell it right, you both stand to win from it.

You may want to plan your approach when you see him. I'm not sure if he has any deer stands or blinds hiding in there or not but maybe you can work it out with him. At the least you will have a clear conscience either way.
What foragefarmer said. That also gives a nice Birdseye view with property lines. Since he is a hunter you could offer to make brush piles out of the branches to promote wildlife. Let him know you can help yourself and him out by cutting wood on his land.
Get his phone number too, you need to get permission every year! And do not try to approach when he is actively hunting.

Here in Maine the tax records are kept at the town hall, and many of those are available online. Well, maybe not many, but some. Deeds are kept at the county courthouse. Often times you need a name or a book and page number of a deed to even begin finding anything at the courthouse. Finding the name starts at the tax assessors office. It will have a mailing address for them because they have to send the tax bill somewhere.
If i was scavenging on hunting property I would offer the following, for wood I really wanted, once you have used one of the prior ideas to get in touch with him I would discuss the following ideas. 1.You will work with him on a schedule (out before archery stands go in, and not back until after the last rifle or muzzle loader season ends) 2.You will work with him to both create brush piles, and clear shooting lanes if he shares where his stands are 3.You have no interest in hunting yourself, and you will watch for any activity on his property from other hunters or trappers that he may not have authorized 4.In your travels clearing, you will find sign, scrapes, even see some deer perhaps before the saws are fired up, and you will let him know what you saw and what patterns you have seen. 5.You can offer to clear trees that might restrict growth of the trees he want, like white oaks producing acorns etc... 6.And should he ever want to clear some trees for a food plot, you'd be his man to take trees. 7.You could offer to help him post it if its not posted already
